Anyone Geocache?

How do you do it with toddler/preschoolers? How do you get excited about helping you find it but yet stay quiet enough about it so that the cache isn't 'muggled'? I'm new to this - DH and I did our first find a few weeks ago while we were out of town and had a lot of fun doing it. I would love to do more and take the kids - just not sure how exactly to do it with a 2 and 4 year old.

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

My parents are the past president & secretary of the Michigan Geocaching Organization. Check out the website for lots of great info! I agree with the others - pick caches that are in parks & rec areas and go on Sunday morning! Have fun with it - it's an awesome hobby!

We love geocaching! We have not attempted to take our 3 yr old yet though. I think he may be just getting to the age where he would have fun with it. I would recommend looking at the maps of where the caches are located and only attempt the ones that are located in parks for safety reasons. My husband and I also have ran into sketchy areas and decided to not do those ones. Also, the Detroit Metroparks have caches. We did those and it's a good way to see all the parks. And, if you get all the caches, I believe you get something (I think a free parking pass for the year). Have fun!

we did it for a while, but we came across some very wierd people, the caches are sometimes hidden in questionable places where people frequent to do drugs and have sex(hidden in woods etc). so i had to reluctantly stop, it was great fun, but stick to caches which are hidden in parks and very public areas

We have been taking our twins since they were 7 and they love it. Find caches in parks or just short walks from parking - there are some good ones on the Clinton River trail - including a Mr Potato Head one near the I75 bridge! Make sure you only go looking for big caches - check the website for the size as kids get easily frustrated when they can't find the prize. Sunday mornings are good times to hunt - lots of other people are either still in bed or in church so you often can make more noise or be more obvious. Have fun!! Geocache Team UKHOWELL.

We went out today looking for "Gone Batty" it was our first try and it didn't go well. My four year old told me he quit nature. I was using the cacheberry app on my blackberry and I didn't think it was very reliable. Oh well. Any suggestions on a local cache in Northville that would be very easy for a first find?
