I am so excited!!! My husband & I are taking our boys to Yellowstone the 2nd week of June. Yay! Now we have to decide where to stay.....If we stay near the east entrance, we would end up staying about 50 mi away from the park in Cody. I found a really cute campground with little cabins for only $38/night. Plus, the campground has gotten great reviews! Or....we could stay near the west entrance. It would take a little longer to get there but we would have to do a lot less driving to get into the park. There are a ton of hotels/motels just outside the west entrance. If you've ever been to Yellowstone and have any suggestions about affordable (under $100/night) places to stay and fun things to do, please clue me in!

What can I do next?

We were in Yellowstone in 2000, just my DH and I. We camped in a tent, so I can't recommend any cabins. However, I can recommend that you stay on the side of the park that is near the Grand Tetons. There was a big fire in the late 80s and much of the forest in Yellowstone burned. That portion of the park looks like a bunch of telephone poles (burnt up tree trunks) surrounded by new growth (very small trees). The rest of the park was beautiful, but there was another big fire shortly after we left which we heard burned up part of the pretty forest that was left. However, the Grand Tetons were GORGEOUS with great hikes, beautiful waterfalls and it's very, very close to Yellowstone. Now, I'm not telling you to skip Yellowstone because it has some unique characteristics you can't find anywhere else. Old Faithful is cool - and there are other geysers that are even more impressive that go off less frequently. All the hydrothermal stuff is amazing.

Have a great time!!!

We stayed in the park... in a hotel. It is lovely, but I wish we'd gone when our kids were older. They were 2, 3 and 4. A little young. But the opportunity to go came up and we went.

We went the last weekend of May and there was a ton of snow and it was snowing. It was very cold at night, to be out in the weather, but fine in the daytime.

The park wasn't really set up for people with little kids at the hotels. Everything was so hard there. And there was a lot of walking on trails where we had to carry them because it wasn't safe for them to walk. Fortunately, my brother was with us so we each carried one child.

The kids loved it, but it was hard on me. I do remember alot of glares from adults without kids at one park info center... my kids were so excited and wouldn't be quiet because they'd had no where to run around all day, so they were noisy.

We camped in a tent inside the park. I'd recommend trying to stay either inside the park, or the little town at the west entrance. Between Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, the two parks themselves are ENORMOUS. You'll spend an hour or two driving INSIDE the park just to see the different stuff (we saw a lot of great buffalo, which I'm sure your boys will love), so I wouldn't want an hour + drive to get to the park on top of that. But the whole area is gorgeous, and I'm sure you'll have a great time. Enjoy!

I think you'll have a great time no matter where you stay- especially if it got great reviews. We stayed in cabins inside the park and I remember there were cute little prairie dogs going in and out from under our cabin in the mornings. I LOVED Yellowstone best of all the national/state parks we visited as a kid. Your boys will have a blast!

Oh my gosh. YOu found cabins for $38 a night. Thats an excellent price. I don't think you will do any better than that as far as price. My husband and I went there this past summer. We stayed in 3 different locations. None of them were under $120 a night and one was almost $200. I absolutely loved it...its the most beautiful country that I have ever seen. I didn't have any kids with us, but if you can stay at lodge at Old Faithful that would be really cool. Its a lot of driving, and hiking. Start getting in shape for all the walking. I would love to know the location of the $38 cabins...for when we go back.

We actually stayed in cabins inside the park. My FIL payed for it, so I don't know the cost, but having what was then a 2 1/2 year old, it was worth it! It was an amazing experience all around! I hope you guys have fun!
