My cousin just delivered a healthy baby boy 6 weeks ago, and he had a 2 vessel cord. She was very distraught over the news as well, and really did not want to talk about it. She was closely monitored and everything was/is fine. Good Luck!
My doctor just informed me that I am carrying a girl and that there are only two vessels in her umbilical cord. Most umbilical cords have a vein and two blood vessels, but mine only has one blood vessel..I read the statistics on this subject about what the risks to the baby are, but am trying not to worry...Anyone else out there experienced this and already gave birth to the baby or are going through it now and are pregnant? Just want any other info. I can get....Thanks.

Hi J.
Congratulations on your new baby. Try not to worry and stop reading information on the internet. When I found out I had gestational diabetes, I performed several internet searches, finding many sites with facts stating that my baby had a high risk of miscarrying and/or being born stillborn. She is fine, as are most babies whose mom have the disorder and followed the advice of their doctor.
What you need to remember, is that there is a lot of data out there and a ton of it is not current. All you are going to do is scare yourself and stress out yourself and the baby. Talk to your doctor about your concerns, get that facts from him. Create with him a healthy living plan for you and the unborn baby. A lot of the findings you read on the internet state worst case, and cases where the mothers were not receiving prenatal care, and cases of women in 3rd world countries. We have advanced very far in the realm of medicine.
I will say a prayer for you and your unborn child.

Hi J.,
I went through this with my second daughter. She had SUA, single umbilical artery. We went to a high risk preg. center and was scared beyond belief when we read all of the info. I ended up having level 2 ultrasounds which are just more detailed ultrasounds so that they could see everything forming. Their first concern was that all the organs were formed correctly and were there. Once that was established (around 6-7 months), then they were just concerned about her growth. Sometimes babies stop being able to eliminate waste, so they stop growing, in which case, they deliver the baby. I ended up delivering a healthy 8 1/2 lb. baby girl at 39 weeks. She had no complications/deformations etc. My pediatrician recommended a renal ultrasound on her when she was 2 months old to double check everything. It turned out fine also.
On a side note, my OB/GYN also had a daughter with SUA and everything turned out fine also.
Yes, a friend of mine has a healthy, beautiful almost 2 yr old girl. During her pregnancy (at her level 3? ultrasound with a perinatologist) they informed her that the baby had a 2 vessel cord. she has no problems from it.
HI, Jenny,
I know of this, as I had a homebirth client (I'm a homebirth midwife) about 13 years ago who carried a child w/ only 2 vessels in the cord. I discussed this situation w/ the CNM whom I had trained under many years previoous and the consult OB. (The CNM had had a homebirth client w/ this years previous during my training.) The ultrasound showed no problems w/ any organs, as much as the ultrasound could show 13 yrs. ago. hhe client went on & delivered at home,a s had been planned. There was some retention of the placenta in 3rd stage; baby was fine. ON the ultrasound at 33 weeks, the baby was showing slightly small for age, so I had her increase protein intake & baby weighed 6lbs & 9 oz. at birth.
J. my son is 15months old during ultrasound they found that it appeared to be a 2 vessel cord when he was born they checked his cord and he did have 3 vessels one was just extremly small. He was born premature due to other complications but I had in my opinion one of the best OB's in SWFL. She monitored everything very closely. And if she didn't I don't think my son would have made it, like I said he had alot of other things going on.
Their is a website www.inspire.com check out the preemie section there you will find alot of mothers that have had problems and will be able to talk to you about thier experinces. Good Luck to you! Keep Positive that little girl knows whats going on!!

My good friend up in Maine had the same experience. Her baby girl was born normal and healthy. I hope you have a similar outcome. Best of luck. God bless.
My girlfriend had this same condition with her baby. The only thing the dr. was truly concerned about was lung development, and he said that they could always give the baby steroids later on in the gestation period to help with this if things weren't progressing. Thankfully everything worked out great, no meds were needed and she gave birth to a healthy happy baby girl. He also told her that before all this new technology a ton of women had this condition, had perfect;y healthy babies, and no one knew the difference, because they couldn't detect it, say when our moms were having us. Good Luck!
J.,
My sister in law had the same problem. Her pregnancy was totally normal other than she only gained 18 lb ( most of us wish for that kind of pregnancy weight gain...) . My niece was only 5lb 6oz at birth, she came 2 weeks early and it was a vaginal delivery. She is now a very , very active and normal 19 month old. Your Ob will monitor the baby's weight gain and development, and she will likely be on the small side, but you should be ok.
Good luck!
I don't know a whole lot about it but a couple of years ago our next door neighbor had this and while her pregnancy wasn't any fun (she was on bed rest, I'm not sure if this was why or if there were other issues) she did give birth to a healthy boy.
So there's one good outcome for you.
hi J.,
i don't know anything about it but i wanted to tell not to worry about. be positive and picture yourself having a healthy and beautiful baby girl. God is good he'll protect you both. Bless you!
Just wanted to add to all the positive responses...my co-worker had this with her daughter. She was monitored a little more closely during the pregnancy but delivered a happy, healthy baby girl.
