Anyone Else NOT Have Ankle/leg Swelling in 2Nd Preg. After a Rough 1St Preg.?

In my first pregnancy, I swelled up like a water balloon around 28 weeks--no blood pressure problems, so it wasn't technically preeclampsia, but I was retaining water like crazy. Feet looked like little loaves of bread, etc. I went into the hospital at about 180 lbs, and three days later (C-section) left at 145 lbs., which tells you how much fluid I had in me! Throughout that experience, I kept my feet up as much as possible, drank as much water as I could stand, and avoided overly salty foods...no help at all. Now I'm pregnant again (DD #1 is almost 30 months), and at 31 weeks, having NO swelling at all with no changes in behavior. I'm curious to know if anyone else had this experience... or if maybe it's just all going to sneak up on me and suddenly I'll be the Pillsbury Dough Girl again. Thanks for anything you can tell me, ladies!

So What Happened?

GREAT NEWS for those of you waiting to see if you blow up like a balloon in your second pregnancy, too... I delivered on June 28 and has basically NO swelling at all for the duration of the pregnancy. And it's not like I did anything special with diet or exercise, and the weather was HORRIBLE here--very very hot and humid. One doctor suggested that my body just had a hard time adjusting to my first pregnancy--I was 37 with my first. Whatever the reason, it made this pregnancy much easier. Weight gain was a little less than my first--about 45 lbs over all. Lost about 20 with delivery (baby was almost 10lbs). So be hopeful!

LoL I am having a bit of the opposite thing going on. With my daughter I didn't swell at all and now I am 39 weeks along w/ my son and for the past 4 weeks my hands and feet seem to swell up randomly (my BP has been 112/62 though so Doc isn't worried). Last night was the worst and I hate my hands swelling more then my feet as it makes it feel weird when I go to close my hands. I will agree with others who said every pregnancy is different and you can't always judge what is going to happen with baby B by what went on with baby A.

I was the same! What a relief to not have to go through all that swelling again! First baby I gained 58 pounds......tons of water weight. Second baby, I gained 25 pounds.
Enjoy! You probably will be fine!
Congrats on your growing family!

I had a fair amount of ankle and hand swelling (not a huge amount, but enough to be noticeable) with my first, who I delivered in May. I had not a scintilla of swelling with my second, who I delivered in November. All summer and no swelling whatsoever! People commented on how little my ankles looked compared to my giant belly.

So you might get lucky! I wish you all the best.

I don't really have any advice b/c I had the same experience as you...I dropped 40 lbs of water weight w/in the first 2 wks of being home after a C-section. Reading all of these responses to your question makes me very excited that when/if I have a second child there is hope that I won't have cankles. Good Luck!

First, I want to remind you that each pregnancy is a different experience. some women have all similar pregnancies and some have all totally different ones. So, no you don't necessarily have to swell with this one. But water retention can happen later too - it happened for my sister in law and 34-35 weeks. So, who knows. But you don't need to worry about it, it is what it is. Just go day by day!

Good luck!

First child I gained 45 pounds, and the last month of the pregnancy the only shoes I could wear were my dad's flip flops. My husband made up a new word for that pregnancy, I had thankles. (thighs/ankles) The first thing every visitor in the hospital said to me after the birth was, "Oh! you have feet again". No other symptoms, but water retention.

Second child I gained 35 pounds with little or no water weight.

For my first pregnancy, I gained 48 pounds, but was down to about 30 when I left the hospital. I had swelling, but also had a stress fracture at about 31 weeks. This pregnancy I have gained 52 pounds already at 37.5 weeks, but only started with the swelling last week. I think each pregnancy is different, and I'm not sure when swelling "typically" happens. Maybe you were early last time, or late this time, or won't get it at all.

I went through the same thing, but I attributed the difference to the weather. With my first I was big and pregnant at the end of the summer in August and Sept. And I was so swollen my ankles and feet look like they were going to pop!! I didn't swell all with with my second, but was big and pregnant in December in January.

I was just like you. My doctor told me I looked like a cartoon character because of all the swelling and fluid retention with my first. I ended up on bed rest at 33 weeks because of super high blood pressure and then had a semi-emergency c-section at 36+ weeks because my health was a pretty big concern. I got pregnant again when the first was about 17 months old and my second pregnancy was a piece of cake ... no high blood pressure, no swelling, etc. I gained nearly 50 pounds with my first and about 25 with my second. Rejoice in it! :)

I had the same experience!!! I attributed it to the time of year. (my first was born at the end of summer and the second in March, so I wasn't really pregnany during those hot summer months second time around.)

Yes, this was me. My first pregnancy I swelled up during my 2nd trimester, or started to retain at that point. And it just got worse as the pregnancy went on. I did have mild blood pressure issues, but never Pre-Eclampsia. I went on to have a natural birth and had no issues.

Second pregnancy I was worried about all of it, but the swelling never occurred. I had normal mild swelling, but nothing even close to my first pregnancy. And my blood pressure remained excellent throughout the whole pregnancy.

I am betting you'll be fine. I think the swelling for me was more of a 1st pregnancy issue and my body adjusting.

Wow lucky girl! My first pregnancy I had no swelling or water retention at ALL until 39 weeks and I ended up with undetected pre eclampsia and postpartum hellp syndrome. That was nearly 3 years ago. Now I'm at 30 weeks with this one and I'm the waddling balloon. I can't even wear anything but flip-flops, thank god that its nearing summer. But thankfully no signs of pre eclampsia at all, just water retention, so I guess it just goes to show you how different every pregnancy can be :o) good luck!

I've been the exact opposite. My first 2 pregnancies had minimal swelling and even then, it was only right at the end. This pregnancy however, I feel like the "Pillsbury Dough girl" (love that name...I think I'll use it from now on!). The swelling has been mainly confined to my feet and ankles, but after a day of being on my feet, I notice the swelling migrating up my lower leg. It eases my mind that you said how much water weight you lost once baby finally arrived. I've been wondering how long I'd have to live like this after the baby is born.

I think every pregnancy is different. I would count your blessings that you aren't swelling up with this pregnancy. Enjoy it! Congrats & good luck!
