I have a 14 count pattern but only 18 count fabric.
It's a checkbook cover...dunno what I should do?
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

Well ladies, I mentioned my problem to my boss and she had some 14 count fabric that she was willing to give me. We do not have a store around us that sells this anymore, our Wal*Mart used to but not anymore...they got rid of all their fabric and cross stitch stuff along with a lot more. So it is hard for me to get to a store that carries it. I am headed to a doctors appointment next Friday in the city so I will be able to stop at JoAnne's or Micheal's or AC Moore's to get some more!!!! I just wanted to start my project now, it is a gift and knew the 18 count was just too small. Thanks for all your help - I love Mamasource!

the "count" refers to stitches per inch...so 18 count fabric will create a smaller design than 14 count fabric. This might not be large enough for a check book cover without adding something to the design, or making the design small in relation to the checkbook.

All my patterns have a chart so I can use different cloth. You could just buy the "right" cloth...its not very expensive. Glad to read the calculations from below....its good to know.

Using 18 count fabric will just make the pattern smaller.
You can work out how big the pattern will be very easily:
Count the number of stitches to the pattern, first left to right, then divide by 18 - that will give you the measurement of the design in inches. Then do the same for the number of stitches going top to bottom.
For example, if your design is 36 by 18 stitches, the design will measure 2 by 1 inches on 18 count fabric.

If you're not happy with the size of the design, you could always stitch a border. There are lots of free pattern designs on the internet, or you could design one yourself.

Happy stitching!

A.,

You can buy aida at JoAnn's by the yard (or less) now.

14 count would make the design larger - you could do the design on 18 count, and put a pretty border around it (or a 2nd border if there already is one).

It might take you longer, but it would be just as pretty - just smaller.

Center the piece on the cover - important! before you start, though.

Good Luck!

Usually on the back of the pattern it gives you what to do for different size fabrics. If not, I would do the pattern in the middle of the check book on your fabric. Then cut it to match your current cover and do the edging the same way just add in the extra stitches.
