Hi there, I was wondering if anyone has ever been to or stationed at Schinnen in the Netherlands? We don't PCS for another year or so but we're putting in our preferences for our next duty station. I've been on their website, but I was looking for any personal experiences. I know that there is no school on base and the kids go to an international school. Any info would help. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Better late than never. Don't have any info on Shinnen but about your house keeping questiions I can suggest www.flylady.net She has helped thougands with her unconventional approach but the good thing is: it's free and everybody has practially 15 min to spare. Don't get overwhelmed with the web site. Read it 15 min a time.

Good luck!

Hi T.! We're stationed at a GSU about 1 1/2 hours away from Schinnen, but get there often as it is our closest PX and commissary. Schinnen is very small, but has most of the things you need -- PX, Shoppette, Burger King, commissary. Geilenkirchen, a NATO base, is about 20 minutes away and has a medical clinic. I haven't been to Hohenfels, but if you are used to a small base experence, then this shouldn't be too big a transition. Plus -- almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English. Sorry I don't know anything about working or schools. My girls go to International Schools here and are having a wonderful time making friends from all over the world. Good luck!

T.,

Schinnen is a nice little community. Schinnen the base is basically just a PX, Commissary, Fitness Center, Post office and Bowling Alley and a few military offices it has only a handful of active duty members most all MP's. It is just basically a support bases for the 2 NATO bases that are 10 minutes and 15 minutes away for all the American personal and some Canadian personal.

As for your daughter she would go to the international school where the rest of the American kids go from the NATO bases. They do have a preschool at the school if your daughter turns 4 before 1st of Sept.

As for working full-time, short of working at AAFES or the CDC there is not many options or if you are in the GS system. Also day care is a HUGE issue for the bases here especially for your daughter's age. I know of a singe active duty mom that has been waiting 6+ months to get in! They have in the long range plan for a big CDC but that is 3 years down the road.

We are stationed at the JFC Brunnsum NATO base but it is all the same as you would have at Schinnen.

If you have any questions, drop me a line or feel free to give me a call +3145-###-###-#### (Netherlands) or ###-###-#### (stateside)
