We are going to need to have my son evaluated for his speech and sensory. He is only 21 months old. But, we are trying to get a head of the game and do not want him to get far behind in areas. Is Childrens House a good place to have this evaluation done? Do the resources and staff care and is this the right place for a 21 month old?

Happy Mom and Wife of 2 precious ones and another one on the way!

What can I do next?

Childrens House was a great place. My son has a sensory disorder and problems with his speech. My only concern was that I'm self employed and my insurance is not very good so I was paying out of pocket $100 3 x a week for a 30 minute visit.

Have you bought any of the books dealing with sensory disorder? They really help. There is a lot you can do at home to help with the sensory disorder. We moved to two story house that had a pool and you wouldn't believe what 3 months of everyday in the pool has done for my son. He went from never wanting to get wet to now he tells me his is ready for summer so he can swim. The stairs in our house have helped him gain control with walking on different levels. The first 5 months we lived there he would sit on his butt all the way down the stairs. Now he walks down and does't even hold the rail.

Also have you contacted the school district in which you live? They do sometimes take kids that are younger with certain diagnosis.

Good luck!

My son was in Speech Therapy there for about a year or so. He was just a bit older than your son, but I do know of several people whose children started even younger there. I thought it was excellent. My son had an expressive delay and the care he got there was much more agressive than he would have gotten from ECI. it did take a while to get the initial evaluation, but once we were in, therapy started the following week. The staff all have advanced degrees and were very professional. What I also liked is that they include the parent in the treatment plan so you can continue with things at home. If you have any questions, feel free to message me.

ECI (Early Childhood Intervention)_will care for a child under the age of 36 months at no cost.

It does take some time to get a child through the system, so follow up is often necessary.

Another option beyond Children's House is Therapy 2000 - they come to you.

I don't know what Children's House is... but if you want an assessment of your child for speech delays or any developmental concerns, try researching "early childhood intervention" programs in your area. Most states have this... and it is a free community based program in which they come to your home.
Or try researching "zero-to-three" programs in your area. They do similar services as well.

Here's a link for example:

My son received speech therapy via our local program, which was free. It is really great. He and I both loved it.

Good luck,
Susan

Two ladies I work with use Baylor's Children's house. They have always had good things to say about it. We use Cooks just because that is where our pedi sent us. Good luck.
