My 2 year old had zirconia crowns placed on Monday under GA and I was definitely not prepared for the aftermath , as we met with the dentist after the procedure she mentioned that she would be sore for like 7-10 days but she seems like she is in terrible pain! I’ve been in contact with the dentist office and they said Tylenol/Motrin rotation and cold foods but then she said to stop giving medications after 48 hours!! Has anyone been through this with their LO?? How long until it gets better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

The tooth is basically bruised & also, the gums around the tooth have been push away, so it can be sore, like a bruise, for awhile. If they are still having extreme pain or sensitivity to hot/cold after a few days, go back to dentist & get an X-ray of the tooth. The tooth could be dying & need a Root Canal. If it is a baby tooth, then they should just extract the tooth, unless the tooth needs to stay for alinement reason. Baby teeth are a lot more sensitive than adult teeth. FYI; I’m a retired dental asst.
Hope it feels better soon!

I'd be getting a second opinion immediately. I'm curious about why anyone would feel crowns were essential in baby teeth anyway, so I think you should talk to your pediatrician and another dentist/oral surgeon. I realize this procedure is done, but you need to know for future teeth. And I'd be concerned about this level of pain and no meds after 48 hours. Kids with the flu certainly take them for more than 48 hours, but I think someone should look at your child and assess the inflammation and anything else (infection?) that could be causing this.

I haven't had a child who's had crowns, but I've had a lot of dental work done. While it's normal to have soreness around the gums, it should be more discomfort instead of actual pain. Is it a constant pain, or is it primarily when she eats? Since it was done under GA it would have been really difficult for them to check her bite to ensure the crowns fit correctly.

You need to take her back to the dentist. Call in the morning and ask for an emergency appointment.

I'm not familiar with EZ Pedocrowns, but I do know that getting a crown is usually not uncomfortable for more than a day. It is not normal to be sore for a 7-10 days, nor have the pain level be bad enough to cause distress. Your child should not be in pain today unless there is something wrong.

I am wondering if you might need a second opinion for your child's dental work.

We have an amazing dentist for our kids and he doesn't believe is crowns for kids. He says there are two options for children let me stress CHILDREN with too much decay for a filling.

1. a baby root canal - which only is successful about 50% of the time. That would involve a crown afterwards. And half of those tend to end up with the teeth not recovering.

or

2. pull the badly infected tooth a have an orthodontist place a metal spacer to hold open the place where the tooth would have been until the permanent teeth grow in and in the case of a two year old that spacer might have to be changed out every few months/or year to keep the correct amount of space.

I am wondering and if you have amazing dental insurance that your dentist is taking advantage of to charge for crowns on a 2 year old. Also, I've had a crown and after about 24/48 hours there is no pain.

Maybe find another dentist and get the work rechecked there a few red flags here for me. Good luck and hugs!!

When dentists say cold foods, they mean room temperature cold, not fridge cold. With dental procedures it’s both hot and cold what is bothersome. Use the Tylenol- Motrin for the time recommended, your baby might be feeling better in that time frame.
