Anybody Have Any Experience W/ Columbus Children's Hospital?

My daughter will be having major head/brain surgery in the next month or so. This will be our first time there--she will be in intensive care for 2-3 days and a week in a regular room (depending on recovery). I've been there for MRIs, the surgery center and outpatient clinics, but never for inpatient services with good experiences.

Just curious if anybody has any insider tips for a successful stay, things to avoid, etc. Any other advice/comments on the hospital would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
M.

I began doing volunteer work for Children's Hospital of Columbus about 15 years ago ... long before becoming a mom. I believe that we are SO INCREDIBLY LUCKY to have such a great hospital here when we need it! I can't really give you any particulars except to say that the hospital is what they call a Level One Trauma Center meaning they are fully staffed and equipped for any possibly emergency at any time. Also, a few weeks ago a report came out rating our Children's Hospital something like 12th in the nation. I believe your daughter will get the best of care!

Good luck.....

I spent 2 1/2 days there with my son in June. I was able to stay in his room with him the whole time. (He was jaundice and sleeping under the lights, so not really a "serious" issue.) If you plan to stay in the hospital, here are my tips.... take a pillow. I slept in the recliner and one more pillow would have helped. Take some snacks for yourself. The cafeteria is good and there were snacks in the refrigerator on his floor for the parents (pudding, cereal, milk, juice), but your favorite snack might help calm your nerves when you are hungry in the middle of the night and don't want to eat ANOTHER cup of pudding. If you need to get away, there is a big TV and computers with internet access in the Blue Jacket Room. There are also board games and books in there. I found it was good to take just an hour and get out of my son's room to regain some sanity.
Good luck and God Bless. Children's is a good hospital.

We have had two children there for a week each...our oldest son was born with a duplicate stomach and pancreas and had surgery and two blood transfusions when he was 9 1/2 weeks old. Our third child had RSV and was there for a week, two nights of which were in the PICU. In a nutshell, we are COMPLETELY, TOTALLY 100% IMPRESSED with EVERYTHING there. I will give you specifics if you would like (I could go on and on and on :) ), so email me if you would like. But, your child, and you, will get top-notch care and will be treated with respect and patience. I will pray for you. GOOD LUCK!!

My son had bilateral hernia repair at 11 weeks. It was just over night, but everyone was great. They didn't let me stay until he was asleep, but that was 4 1/2 yrs ago & I hear they let you stay now. Both my husband & I stayed overnight. The couches pulled out somehow & were pretty comfortable. Not that I got much sleep. lol. We also just spent a couple hours in the ER in Jan. (4 yrs olds will stick their fingers in anything) All the Dr.'s & nurses that helped were great then, also. Sorry that I don't have any particular tips, we just hung out with Ben. The food's not too bad either. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
