There are breastfeeding videos that you can view for free online from this site.
Also, check out http://www.kellymom.com/
It has really great advice on breastfeeding, sleep and all kinds of topics.
You can also buy The Breastfeeding Book by Dr. Sears and his wife, a nurse. They have about 8 kids, and she breastfed them all. They are proponents of the family bed and letting the child decide when to wean, even if that is not until 2 or 3. But if you are not into that stuff (I'm not) just ignore that part of the book. The rest is still really good information that helped me lot, especially in the beginning. Get the book before you give birth and read it.

also, do not leave the hospital without getting a lactation consultant to come to your room and help you. You may even want to have her come to your house for a few sessions to help. I had a c-section and had trouble at first because my son was given bottles in the hospital before I had a chance to even see him after coming out of surgery. I would make it clear to the staff before you give birth that you want to breastfeed exclusively, if that is your decision. if you want to give bottles, it is recommended that you wait to introduce them until the baby has a good handle on breastfeeding, usually about 1 month.

The best help I got was sitting with a private breastfeeding consultant the week my daughter was born. They had a consultant in the hospital who met us before we were released, but at that point I didn't know what issues to expect. Now, 11 months in, and we are still breastfeeding.

I don't know of any DVDs either. I went to a class in Manhattan, which was sort of helpful. I would suggest finding out whether the hospital will have a lactation consultant available. You mostly just need someone to make sure the baby is latching on correctly. Most other info you can get from the web or books. If you have issues once you leave the hospital you can have a lactation consultant come to your home or talk to one on the phone. I found lactation consultants to be very helpful. There are also breastfeeding support groups in some areas (I know there's a couple in Manhattan, probably other places too). Don't give up breastfeeding if you have problems at first, the problems can be worked out and it's so worth it for both you and baby. Good luck!

Hi R.,

Unfortunately I don't know of any breastfeeding DVD to recommend, but I wanted to post to encourage you to find your local chapter meeting of La Leche League (check http://www.llli.org/Web/NewYork.html for help). I've been going since before my daughter was born, and I can't recommend it highly enough -- the meeting leaders are fantastic and are there to help with any questions you might have. Plus there are always breastfeeding moms at the meetings, so you can observe them and ask questions too.

Good luck to you and I hope you have a wonderful remainder of your third trimester and a beautiful birth experience!
