I'm looking for relief for my 2 year who has a severe case of Eczema. We've been to the dermatologist several times and nothing they prescribed has worked! I'm looking for answers and wondered what other Moms have used on their kids.

What can I do next?

food allergies are the number one reason for eczema. The most common are wheat and dairy. Take him to an allergist. Also fish oils and probiotics are extremely helpful

What works best on my daughter is the palmers cocoa butter face butter. It says face, but can be used anywhere. Since nothing the dermatologist is prescribing is working, I would take him to an allergist.

At the children's hospital where i am a nurse, we also recommend baths only a few times a week, not every day, and in water that is just warm, not too hot. In addition to aquaphor cream, there is another product on the market called triple cream for eczema, made by the same company that makes triple paste for diaper rash. U should def take the advice of others that have written about seeking out an allergist...it could make all the difference! apply creams several times a day, not just after bath also. good luck!!

I agree with both PPs. There are food triggers. Watch dairy too. Also the more pure and natural all of your products are (soaps, shampoos, detergents, etc.) the better he will feel.
Also, wanted to mention not over-bathing. Try bathing every other day and when he is getting a bath--use tepid (not hot or very warm) water. As far as lotions, etc. they are all about the same I think. There is a product called A-Mantel that may help. You may have to ask your pharmacist to order it for you.

My 6-year-old has had eczema for years. Aquaphor right after bath works best for the reddened skin patches. At times, I have also had a prescription steroid cream for short-term use when he has had severe flare-ups. Have you seen an allergist? I would get him tested for food allergies. My son also takes Zyrtec daily. What also helped us was switching to sensitive skin, dye-free, fragrance free everything and completely removing fabric softener from our family laundry. I don't use any softener in the wash and hypoallergenic dryer sheets, like Bounce Free. My son's has also gotten better with age. Some kids do grow out of it, so have hope.

I have sons, 5 and 2, who both have eczema. This winter has proven to be bad, already. I use Aguaphor or Eucerin after baths, but for the really rough cracked and red I use hydrocortisone 1% until they start to clear up.If thats not helping my pediatrician prescribed 2% hydrocortisone, so go to your pediatrician. There may be foods that trigger your children's eczema.I suggest keeping a journal and recording when there eczema gets worse. I'm sure you already know, use aveeno bath wash and lotion, you could also try ground up oatmeal baths. Make sure your laundry detergent is allergen free, the best would be All free and clear, and use allergen free softner. I hope this helps you some. I also want to suggest no bubble baths, anything scented as well. I have posted other responses to eczema problems on mamasource before that have helped out others too. I can't remember exactly everything I've wrote before, you could always check them out.
Good Luck, I know it can be miserable.

Have you tried ruling certain foods out? Strawberries, corn and chocolate are big culprits.

Best thing is to find the trigger(s). My 2yo daughter had horrible eczema. Once I found out her triggers (tons of foods) and eliminated them from her diet (and mine, I was nursing her) she is totally eczema free and all I do is use non medicated lotion on her skin when I give her a bath. She doesn't use any steroid creams or anything else. I would get to a pediatric allergist. We go to Dr Beausoleil at Main Line Allergy in King of Prussia. I really like her, in fact, I like her so much that I travel over 2 hours to see her. She really listens and seems to care a lot.

I completely agree with the others...you need to track down the triggers. I did this with my little boy and was finally able to pinpoint sunscreen as the problem. I also took him to and allergist where I found he was allergic to all outdoor allergens and had a soy sensitivity. I strongly encourage you to see an allergist. Eczema will often go hand in hand with allergies and asthma.

R.,

With the help of the mamasource moms...

The cause of my 3 year olds eczema was detergent, bath products, shampoo, sunscreen.

I now use all free and clear, even scent fee fabric sheets. Neutrogena sunscreen, and bath-aveeno. I use AQUAPHOR lotion by eucerin. It all cleared her right up! The bath products really made it bad, as soon as I stopped and switched, used aquaphor it went away completely! I buy bubble bath on occasion for a treat but if I use it more than once in awhile, the eczema comes back.

GOOD LUCK

My daughter has a rash on her face right now that we aren't getting answers about... so I have been doing a LOT of research on my own... I have come across several studies done within the past few years on using one cup regular bleach in the bath water two times a week - this is to be a miracle for children with eczema! I've tried it three times now with my daughter and it doesn't seem to impact the rash unfortunately... but do your research on this one, it might be something that works for your child.

I agree about foods. You might take your little one to an allergist to have them tested.

We found out our daughter was severely allergic to several foods, and by cutting them out of her diet, her eczema is 85-90% better.

We use black soap and pure shea butter with our son and---I am not making this up---saw relief within a day and have had minor flareups, all readily contained by the combination. If you don't know where to find these in your community, let me know. We liked it so much, we started selling both as part of our vending business. I'm glad to get some to you or help you locate a local source.

Either way, Shea butter and black soap are AMAZING!

R., you need to be very careful with products that you put on your son's skin, including bath products and products you clean your bath with. There are also nutrional products that can help ,like fish-oil and pro-biotic's. You can e-mail me at ____@____.com and I can send you more info..

Hello! The best product to try is aquaphor. You can get it at walmart. It is amazing.

I also highly recommend going to an allergy specialist. We found out my daughter is allergic to dairy, egg, soy, dust mites and yellow dye 5. Once we cut all the allergens out her eczema went away.

Also try all natural bath products, shampoo, and laundry soap. Trader Joes has amazing natural products.

i agree with PP that food sensitivities are a good thing to look into. when m daughter was an infant we found she was sensitive to corn. once I cut that out of my diet (I was breastfeeding), her eczema cleared up.

My chiropractor actually determined that my daughter had the sensitivity through a technique called Kinesiology. It was a really crazy thing where she just took samples of different food in tubes and held the closed tube near my daughter's face -- then she pressed on my outstretched arm and from how my arm strength reacted to different tubes, she found the corn sensitivity. It sounds crazy -- but its a completly non-invasive procedure, and it worked great.

So consider talkin to your chiropractor to see if they practice Kinesiology. It doesn't hurt your child at all -- completely non-invasive, and maybe you'll find some good results!

Good luck

Hi R.,

Just one more mom to say check the foods! My son had awful eczema as an infant. I researched triggers online and cut dairy out of my diet, as I was bf'ing. Two weeks after that, no more eczema. His dairy allergy was confirmed by blood test at his one year visit. I hope he grows out of it, but at two years old, we're still withholding dairy. Best of luck!

Have you thought about calling the Edgar Cayce Institute
at Atlantic University in Virginia Beach, VA.

I have seen help in the pictures on their wall from sufferers before and after.

Just wanted to share this.

Hi R.,

My name is C. Irvine and I have been using some products from Arbonne that have all but cured my children's ecezema. What I love about the products are, that they are botanically based, so I don't have to worry about harmful side effects for my kids. I have some samples if you would like me to send you some. Please let me know.

My little guy suffered with eczema for almost 2 years. What I found out about body wash, shampoo, and cleaning products was quite alarming. We switched to buying from a company that uses more natural ingredients and nothing harmful or cancer causing. What a difference it made for him, within 2-3 months, his eczema was totally cleared up. I know it is food allergies for many people, but we didn't have to buy special creams or anything, once we switched over the products in our home. Let me know if you want to know more.

My mom told me about research being done about bleach baths to kills germs that inflame the eczema condition. This is a good link to information about treatment options.

http://www.kidsdr.com/daily-dose/new-science-behind-eczema

It creates a chlorine solution similar to conditions in a swimming pool. Hope you find a solution that works for your family. We daughter had it for a loooong time, but it did eventually clear up completely.
