All my kids have innies I use alcohol on a q-tip to get in there this also dries quickly so it doesn't get funky inside. This works good.
I have not cleaned my boy's belly button since he was born 7 months ago. He has some nice lint in there. With my innie I usually let baby oil soak and then clean it out with a q-tip. I tried this with my son but he won't sit still long enough for the oil to do it's job any other suggestions? His belly button is kind of a swirl.

Dear Ellen,
My daughter's favorite thing was lifting my dad's shirt and getting the lint out of his belly button.
EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW.
He would just sit on the couch and watch TV and let her do it.
Just soak your son in the tub and gently use a wash cloth. When you get him out of the bath, you can just rub a little oil on his belly button and let him go. A couple drops of hydrogen peroxide will help bubble out any germs and doesn't sting or anything.
Cleaning ears and belly buttons and clipping fingernails are often best done while they are asleep.
Take care!
I've never cleaned my sons belly button, maybe I should check it out our missing keys could be in there!
Seriously though, lint is hamless just soak him in the tub.
To echo what Shane B said... best done when they are asleep... I also found that when they fall asleep in their car seat its the best time to groom them.
First of all, they are strapped down in a good position.
Secondly, you are in a good position because you don't have to try to climb into the crib or move them to get to their nails and ears. :-)
Thirdly, if you get them asleep in the car during the day, the best light to do all that stuff is sunlight! (I keep an extra pair of nail clippers in my car now just in case)
I've also trimmed my kid's bangs that way.
Hope that helps!

Use vaseline or A&D Ointment (NOT Cream). Use a Qtip to spin it around in there and another Qtip to spin it clean. Alchohol and Peroxide will work, too, but I don't like to use those products especially if there's a chance of spilling over an uncooperative child. Play the "tickle the belly button" game to get SOME level of cooperation. You could use a baby wipe, too. Qtip in the wipe and wipe in the belly button. Soap and water, too. Just go for it.
Enjoy!

I use peroxide. You may have to lay him on a bed and hold him down with your forearm/ elbow or try doing it while he is watching TV.
HI Ellen
I use Hydrogen peroxide and a Q tip of two

First let me say it is very cute you are cleaning your baby's belly button. I also used to use a Q tip on my daughters, just dip it in the oil and swab it in there. All the gunk won't come out right away, but repeat on subsequent days. Enjoy your baby!
Lint doesnt hurt you. I'd just let him play in the tub and soak/wipe it out then. Guess I'm not a clean freak when it comes to linty belly buttons. I do find it amusing that my husband will have a nice collection of lint each & every single day in his bellybutton!
I dip a q-tip in rubbing alcohol and it works great! If he won't let you do it while he's awake, try sneaking it when he's sleeping. =) Good Luck.
Gosh - I've never thought about it! I have a 6 yr old and 9 yr old. Don't know if I've ever cleaned their belly buttons. ;)
My girl's got a big outie that she likes to push and say "BOOP" so I'm no help. We just use a washcloth. Only outie in the whole family.
I've always used lotion and let it sit a bit, then clean it out with a q-tip. My oldest does it on his own now and my two youngest are starting to do it on their own as well.
