short version... My son's daycare teachers suggested he had developmental delays...we had him assessed and diagnosed...his teachers were excited that we were getting First Steps involved...First Steps interventions were to begin on Monday and they asked us to leave on the Thursday before the first meeting! We were devastated and felt abandoned...He still asks for his teachers and friends by name and can't understand why we won't "let him go to school"...that would be hard to understand at 2 even if no delays!...we need a program that will be willing to work with him and focus on his strengths instead of his weaknesses...We have looked into Friends School and Creative Beginnings but neither has space so we're on their wait lists...any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

....sorry! I guess I should have specified that I'm in Louisville, KY...I will drive him to any part of town if it is a good program with teachers who appreciate and respect him for who he is! First Steps is an early intervention program here and they are helping him A LOT!!! I really want him to have some peer interaction because I know he misses it...we were at a stoplight today about to turn and go home and he pointed straight ahead (where his old school is) and said "go that way!" I tried to distract him and talk about going to see daddy but he said, "go Corey school flease..." it breaks my heart that he wants to be with them so bad and I can't take him! Thanks for all the suggestions and if anybody knows about a program in the Louisville area besides the two I listed above, I'd love to hear about them!...

So What Happened?

Since we were asked to leave his daycare program, Corey is like a new kid! His caregivers there told me they perceived his problems as behavioral and not developmental. I feel this belief led to excessive negativity directed at him that increased his anxiety and frustration. Now, he's much more laid back, open, and talking up a storm! We are almost guaranteed a spot in a great program in January but, we have since discovered that there are many ways to provide structured interactions with kids his age without leaving him somewhere for 20 hours a week. We may do something part time to start getting him ready for preschool but, if we do it will be somewhere with realistic expectations that encourages independence and free play along with structure and boundaries...thanks to all for the advice!

Hi B.

I have a 3 and half year old son with speech delays. He has been diagnosed with Speech Apraxia.
and my daughter is 2 she has speech and physical delays.

They both have gone to the local MRDD school *Mental Retardation Developemental delay*

They have a toddler program. They get speech therapy and my daughter gets physical therapy.

The local hospital also provide them with speech and physical therapy.

I would suggest contacting the local hospital and I am sure that they can get him in for some therapy. And maybe check to see if you have a program like Ohio. Help me grow up here for children at risk.

I don't know what area you are in, but in our area (Englewood, Vandalia, North Dayton) we have the Northview School. It is part of the MRDD schools and it is a really good school. I know that they have space especially in their afternoon classes. They go up to 4 days a week (it's up to you). Hope this helps

another idea around here they have a program called help me grow that does intervention and they might be able to help you find placement for your son if nothing else. the program sounds similar though to the one you mentioned so i'm not sure if your area would have it, also your local department of job and family services might be able to help you find a place, i'm saurprised the people you are currently working with don't have any suggestions on where to place him and that you were asked to leave a preschool program based on developmental delays that seems almsot illegal to me, so some regualr centers might except him and still be able to have ppl come in to help, also around ehre the local school district does intervention at the prschools for speech and such so you might want to call them. good luck and ya know if they were that quick to send your son packing he's better off without them anyways.

Look into Help Me Grow! It was an amazing program that helped my developmentally delayed daughter. Thru Help Me Grow she attended the Children's Development Center in Amherst and it was wonderful. Now my daughter is going to be four years old but her development is about a year ahead of the game!
