My Ob called today (I had an ultrasound on Friday) she said they noticed that the unbilical cord has only one vessel and it should have two. All she said is that this could mean the baby may have urinary problems that may require surgery and it could also cause the baby to stop growing at the end of the pregnacy. When I looked it up online the side affects can be anything from down syndrome to heart problems to death.
Anyone else have a single vessel umbilical cord? What happened?
My SIL had this and everything was fine! She has a healthy baby girl.
My former neighbor did, was on bed rest for most of her pregnancy (which I'm not sure if there were other issues as well) and then delivered a healthy son. The single vessel cord COULD mean that some of those other anomalies are present but if they aren't it doesn't cause them.
I was looking for some other info and happened to run across this: http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/SUA.html - which seemed reassuring as did the bottom of the two links. Everything I've read says that, assuming there are no accompanying fetal abnormalities, babies with a single umbilical artery generally do quite well. They do monitor a little more closely both during pregnancy and labor and, depending on your doctor, may require you to have a c-section but other than that there are no long term affects.

i have never heard of this and no nothing about it i just wanted to let you know you will be in my prayers that baby will be fine try to relax and not stress .
When I was born the dr discovered I had the same thing (no ultrasounds to tell them beforehand!). I was full term,9 lbs, 10 oz and perfectly healthy. As with anything, sometimes there are complications, but the majority end up being completely normal.
