I am an LVN, I recently renewed my license in Jan 2010. I am thinking about quitting work to stay home with my kids, but I want to know how do I go about keeping my license current?

What can I do next?

It depends on the state. I'm licensed in KS and MO. KS requires 30 continuing ed hours ever 2 years. MO, really, all I have to do is write a check every 2 years. BUT, IF I were to go back to work clinically, depending on the facility, I would have to take some classes to bring my skills up to date.

In TX - complete you continuing education credits every year - and pay your renwal fee. Keep copies of your continuing education - you don't need to submit them as long as you are current on your license.

I'm a Nurse, I work once a week. Do you have a employer who will let you make your own schedule? I just let them know what day (s) and they'll take what they can get.

I'm not a nurse, but my mom was. She quit her job to stay at home with us when my little brother was born about 10 months after they adopted me. She didn't keep her license current, but her understanding was that she could get her license again after taking a few classes to get the most updated information. I don't know if that's how it really works, but maybe you could ask someone from the school where you got your certification in the first place. I'm sure they would know.

BTW, my mom never went back to work. She loved being at home with us and never looked back. She's a grandma now with only a 13yo still at home and she has no regrets.
