Any Lunch Ideas for My Husband?

Hi Moms,

My husband has a job where he is on the road all day. We are trying to save money- not having him buy lunches everyday which can add up. He spends about $5-$10 a day on lunches. Sometimes he even chooses lunches that are pretty bad for him..yes...fast food. I hate the idea of him eating that everyday and just sitting in the car driving and clogging his arteries.

He's brought some lunches...but gets tired of it fast and always wants "hot" lunches. He's tried making sandwiches(which can only go so far), left overs where he wouldn't have to heat up..like pizza. Drinks WAY too much soda. He's tried bringing water and has it stocked up in his trunk, but he complains about not having any taste. I have him bring snacks..healthy ones..like trail mixes, some fruit(HE'LL GO FOR IT SOMETIMES).

I would just like to get some suggestions from you moms...any ideas for lunches? I'd like to have a menu planned out on Sunday..so he has something for the whole week and he can't complain about it. HELP! Thank you!!!!

What can I do next?

I would plan 4 lunches a week and give him Fridays off to go out to eat. That way he will force himself to eat the packed lunch knowing he gets what he wants at the end of the week. (you got to give him something to look forward to)

As for lunches, try buying a rotisserie chicken for around $5 at your grocery store and use that chicken to make chicken salad on bread one day (add, pecans, diced granny smith apples and/or dried cranberries to give it some fun).

Next day just shred the chicken and put it in a wrap (there are even flavored wraps out there that can give you more flavor). You can add lettuce, avocados, red peppers (fresh or roasted), blanched green beans (for crunch), tomatoes... to give it some more flavor.

Instead of the typical mayo try either mustard or for a crowd pleaser I always use ranch or Italian dressing. The addition of some of the vegetables and dressing give it different texture and flavor so it doesn't feel like he is eating another dry turkey sandwich.

I recently just made a tuna fish sandwich which is not really my favorite...however, adding diced apples and raisins made it different and tasted great.

I know he is on the road and not able to heat things up. What about one day giving him a hearty soup or chili in a Thermos, if you go on Amazon you can find some great ones for around $23 with free shipping!

Good Luck!

In addition to the thermos for soups they also make a hot/cold pack for insulated lunch boxes. You just heat the pack up in the microwave before packing it into the lunchbox and be sure your food is well heated too. I'll use one for some of my husbands meals and even after 4,5 hours he says it's still hot! That makes packing a nice hot left over as a meal more do-able since he can't heat it on the road! That being said your possibilities are endless!

My husband recently was told that his triglyceride levels were very high so I try to make his lunches healthier these days. One day I'll pack a big mixed greens salad with cheese and a turkey or ham sandwich and keeping his dressing in a separate container it's fine in his cold pack lunch box til he eats.

Maybe pack a peanut and jelly sandwich or ham/turkey wrap on the days that you pack up a nice hot soup! Or you could send him a baked potato and seasoned chicken breast! (I'll buy large packs on sale at the grocery and cook and freeze them individually so I can use them in my husbands lunch or for dinner in a pinch!)

I always pack up some kind of munchies for my husband too or he ends up at the snack counter at work! A handful of mixed nuts, pack of peanut butter and cheese crackers, an extra piece of fruit. Something healthy!

And as for the boring water, I can't blame him! I've been drinking a gallon a day since I found out I was pregnant and it gets pretty monotonous! I like to add some flavor with lemons or limes, sometimes I'll buy a pack of the Propel brand flavor sticks too. My favorite is the mixed berry. You just add it to a bottle of water (or reusable container to the right amt of water) and shake! The propel brand is colorless so he'll feel less silly about it!

At my fathers request, my mother has been packing the exact same thing in my dad's lunch for the past 19 years! (A bologna or ham sandwich, an apple, a yogurt cup, a carrot, a baggy of mixed nuts and a baggie of raisins.) I'm not sure how dad can eat the same thing everyday, but it's ok to not have a spectacular lunch packed for him everyday! He'll survive if you double it once or twice a week! ;)

I like to surprise my husband for his lunch as well! Sometimes I'll add in a few cookies or snack sized candy bars with a love note!

Can he get a "hot thermos"? My hubby loves to take soup to lunch - sometime I make my own, but most of the time it is canned - Campbells Chunky Healthy Choice or Progresso seem to be his favorites (that are reasonably healthy). (His fav is Campbells Chunky Chicken and Sausage Gumbo) I usually get them at Super WalMart or on sale at our Acme for about $1.50 a can. In the lunch box, I include 2 other things - sometimes a tupperware of almonds, a pickle, some beef Jerky, an apple or some other fruit, a banana, a small yogurt. Hubby says he looks forward to opening his lunch box to see what he has. (and once in a while I piece of chocolate or a complimentary note makes it in too!)

Loved some of the suggestions that you got! Let me also share some of mine. For snacks I pack dried fruit, nuts, wasabi peas, I put Emergen-C in his water. It comes in a ton of flavors, has vitamins and is really good for him!

-A Costco rotissorie chicken is tasty and costs $5. It could be quartered for several lunches.
-Some home-baked Safeway frozen bread loaf with butter for carb.
-An egg, a fruit, cooked or raw veggies, and homemade granolas for snack. -Bring a bottle of juice poured from a gallon ...
-Other protein ideas: pork stews cooked with veggies (carrots, zucinni, corns, spinach etc.) Pork is about $3 per lb., bring 1/3 lb. is only $1 each lunch. Park the meat in a container the night before and store in fridge, bring it out in morning and it will go to room temp by lunchtime.
-Of course if everything is homemade, it's most economical.

They sell refridgerated coolers that plug into the cigarette lighter in a car. This can keep his drinks and cold lunches cold. A tip to packing hot foods in a thermos: before you put the soup/stew/whatever into the thermos, fill the thermos with boiling water until the thermos itself feels hot. Then pour the water out and pour the hot soup/stew/whatever in. It will keep hot foods hot much longer.
I keep a small lunch tote in my car at all times with healthy, non-perishable foods in it like crackers, nuts, dried fruits, etc. It keeps me from passing out from hunger on the days i'm running wild and also keeps me out of the drive-thru line. I'm not in my car all day like your hubby is though.
