Any Luck with Cool Effect Pull Ups?

i am tentatively trying to potty train my son right now. Unfortunately, he is VERY stubborn. I have worked in childcare for many years, ran an in-home daycare, and have a 5 year old daughter.Potty training is not really new to me!

however, my son is just so ridiculously stubborn! he will pee on the potty every time he gets on it and has even pooped on the potty twice. HOWEVER, it is only on his own agenda. He requests to wear underwear often, but just will not go potty when he is wearing them and simply does not care if he pees in them. When he pees in a diaper i woud say about 60% of the time he comes to you pulling them down saying, "i pee ma" or "poopie ma" on the times when he does NOT tell you he fights you every step of the way to change his diaper.

I am trying positive rewards by giving him a special treat or surprise if he optionally goes on the potty often, but it back fires and just causes massive screaming fits when he refuses the potty and doesnt get a treat. He loathes having diaper changes and will run from me when he has a poopie diaper because he doesnt want to lay down and have it changed. I know that having him potty trained would benefit all of us, but its definitely an up hill battle.

I am generally not a pull-up person, but i did get him some of the cool effect ones yesterday to see if maybe the feeling of being cold would just make him not want to pee in them anymore! have anyone else used them and had any luck! or anyone else potty trained a really stubborn child?

What can I do next?

Cool effects didn't work for us, the pull ups that had designs that would disapear when he peed helped.
One thing I heard for potty training a stubborn child is each monday morning ask them if they want to wear underwear and go in the potty, if they say no, put them in diapers and don't mention it again until the next monday. Let it be the child's choice.
For my son it had to be his choice. When I started potty training him it was a fight and caused major fits, finally I backed off and told him to let me know when he was ready. One day, he said he wanted to wear big boy underwear and since it was his choice he did great. (He was 3 1/2 when that happened and it nearly killed me to have him that old in diapers, but looking back it was the best way to go for him)

Those cool effect diapers didnt work for us at all. What we ended up trying was putting toys and even books in the bathroom that were some of her favorites and thats the only place they could be. If she went on the potty and did her business then she could take the toy out of the bathroom to continue to play with it. But if she made an accident we put the toy back into the bathroom and started all over again. We kept our girl in panties all the time, not going back or forth between diapers unless it was nap time. This way she didnt get confused or stubborn on how she wanted it. Sure it took alot of panties the first few weeks but gradually she got the point that panties are for the day time and diapers were for the nap time only.

my daughter never seemed to notice a difference. A friend of mine's daughter would jump and scream in pain. I think they're not worth it.

Hi,
I am not sure if they work to increase the chances of potty training but the kids definitely feel the cold. My mom bought these for my son by mistake and he began running up and the hallway pointing at his diaper yelling, COLD, COLD!!! My son was stubborn with potty training too and I think because he was just not ready. It was torture for both of us. We waited a few months and it was so easy after that. My parents gave him money each time he went and was so excited to start a money jar. When my son realizes that i back off of him, he is less likely to resist. Human nature I suppose. So if I say, fine, dont eat dinner..whatever, he automatically wants the dinner. You can try this in regard to changing diapers. Will he let you change him when standing up? or at least stand for putting the diaper back on. I loved pull ups for this reason.

Go with bare bottom! Makes them very aware of what is happening. And yes, there will be some mess but it made a huge difference with my son.

I saw a thing on the news a while back about a little girl that actually got chemical burns from the chemical that they use to those things to give off the "cool effect". The pull-up got wet when she peed and the stuff getting activated caused her skin to burn and blister - ouch! The news report went on to say that it's happened in rare cases to other kids as well. Even if they worked, I would not take the chance!

We didn't have any luck with them. The cool sensation didn't matter to my daughter. She knew she wouldn't make a mess in them and would pee and go on about her business. They are too much like diapers. What has helped greatly is a Potty Watch. (got ours at Babies R Us) You can set it to go off in 30, 60 or 90 minutes intervals. Music plays to let the child know it's time to try. It put the responsibility in her hands. She was tired of me reminding her and would protest when I asked her to go. So far the watch has been great! Another suggestion, get a portable potty for the car so that when the watch goes off you can find a place to pull over and let him try. It's a bit of a pain, but worth the hassle.

My name is L. too. You don't find many of us.

I'm having the exact same problem with my 2 yr old daughter, I get her to go pee in the potty in the morning when she wakes up but from there on out throughout the day she won't go on the potty and she runs from me and has a fit fighting me to not get her diaper/pull-up changed....I am new to potty training! My husband and me are looking into the cooling effects pull-ups as well to see if they will help her understand not to go in her pants anymore....I guess if they don't work, we'll have to stick to diapers until she wants to go?!? I don't really know where to go from this point....
I do know and recommend to people not to use the cheaper version of pull-ups as they do not hold the pee like huggies pull-ups do, I tried the generic White Cloud pull-ups with my 2 yr old daughter and had to change both her pull-up and pants and even socks twice within an hour, again i have trouble getting my 2 yr old even to sit on the potty and go but will go in diaper or pull-up no problem

NO and they left both my potty training kiddos with horrible burn type rashes..even after one pee pee in them...they were screaming...and it took over two weeks of lots of bum cream and hourly diaper changes. they are not only a waste of money but if you have little ones with sensitive skin stay away from them all together. it got the point my then three year old would cry when i went to change him and he thought that i wasgoing to put anothe rone on him...i had to take him to store and he picked out some on his own...they were the fred meyer/kroger brand and he did fine in those and is now successfully potty trained.

hope this helps a bit
libby
