I want to do some volunteer work and I would absolutely LOVE to get into a small law firm to do it. Is this possible? Im going this week to check out volunteer opportunities at the municipal courthouse. The city we used to live in had lots of opportunities in the courthouse but it was a BIG city. (Now we are in a small town) So does anyone know if I have a shot at this? I dont have to work right now and I want to volunteer in something that really interests me. I am a super hard worker- paid or unpaid! I was thinking of typing up a generic letter saying what I wanted to do and maybe take them to a few private practice offices around here. Any ideas moms??
I have many years of clerical and accounting skills- no legal exp. I love to do research and auditing type work too. Some college but not a degree. I just want to get my foot in the door and see where it can lead.
You could always see if there is a legal aid clinic near you. I'm sure they would love volunteers.
My neighbor quit working at the DA's office and has a private practice.
She would give you a shot because she needs a secretary and she would even let you bring your child(unless it was a disruption). It would include childcare of her baby as needed. Sadly, you live too far away.
She would want you to be easy to train as she wants things filed and done her way. She needs absolute confidentiality. No men or kids constantly calling you. No calling off at the last minute. You would have to dress and put make up on to look professional. You would need to be strong enough to deal with clients, some of whom are whacked out.
She would have to trust you.

Do you have references, both work and personal, that can attest to your work ethic and integrity?
What is your background/experience? Do you have clerical or legal experience?
What are your long term goals?
Always try for a paid position first (unless you are married to Bill Gates) and then offer to volunteer if no firms are willing to pay.
So much depends on whether you will find some place to work or volunteer. A lot of it depends not on what you have to offer but whether any firms are in need of said services. So, all you can do is ask!
I would check out the classified sections - I always see listings for similar type work.
Also, check out your local State's Or District's Attorney's Office. They are always in need of volunteers.
You'll have better luck at a legal aid clinic or a state or county office (state's attorney or DA) than with a private lawyer. Many lawyers will not take on volunteers because it's more work to train you and they can afford to hire staff since they bill clients for their staff's time.
If you have many years of clerical and accounting skills, why not look for a paid position in a small law firm? I actually think you'd have better luck doing than than trying to volunteer since qualified and intelligent people are always in short supply.
