Does anyone know what the best hospitals are for delivering in Chicagoland? I'm trying to go for a VBAC (vaginal after c-section) and I want to try to get the best hospital and doctor. Someone recommended Dr. Hussie out of Rush, so I'm looking into that. Any other inputs? Thanks!
I worked with an awesome midwife who is part of a practice that is doctors AND midwives. She and I were planning a VBAC for me (didn't work out that way, but we tried). She is out of Evanston Hospital, which is a wonderful place to deliver. I loved my labor and delivery nurses for both my deliveries - they were completely suuportive of how I wanted to do things. I delivered at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. I cannot rave enough about the care I received in Labor and Delivery and Post-Partum. The nurses were AWESOME and I loved my OB physicians. There are 7 docs total in my OB's practice, so over the course of the week I was there I saw several of them...but they are all great. Send me a message if you want a referral to my OBs practice. As for the VBAC, I would recommend having a discussion with your potential physician asking her/his rate of performing the procedure, outcome data, etc.

The plus of going to an academic medical center eg. Rush, Northwestern, U of C is that they have the most high tech equipment etc if you end up having any complications. The downside is that they are quite oriented toward a medical model and you are more likely to have a C-section there. Your best bet for a VBAC is to find a midwife who is comfortable with such an option but recognize that in many instances, you will still end up with a c-section. The midwifery practice at University of Illinois is well regarded and they are a perinatal level 3 center so also have all the medical back up if you do need it. Good Luck.
I recommend having a midwife. Not sure that they all do vbac, but my midwife in general is awesome (with an OBGYN staff for support as well). They deliver out of Northshore in Evanston, which I thought was awesome

I have delivered twice at Prentice and loved it there both times. My OB is actually in NW Memorial on St. Clair/Huron (easier for work appts as I work in the City). I had vag with 1st and c-section with 3rd. Planning on a large family and the practice is supportive of me doing a VBAC with the other kiddos I am planning. My sister in law raved about Northwest Community in Arlington Heights -- she had a bad experience with her first at Lutheran General (NICU issues) but I have liked their peds ER and peds admission floors -- never used them for delivery though!
