Any Ideas for a "Breakfast" Birthday Party? Donut Cake Ideas?

My son really wants his 6th birthday party to take place at the park. The challenge is that his birthday is next month, and an outdoor party in July will be hot! My idea is to throw him a "breakfast birthday party" that starts at 9:00 am so we can beat the heat. If you have ever thrown a morning birthday party or attended one and can share some ideas as far as what breakfast snacks were served I would really appreciate the input. Specifically, I'm trying to figure out how I create a birthday cake out of donuts. Does anyone know of a bakery that will do this for me? Thanks so much!

I have made this "pizza" for my girls & now they make it for their girls~
It is so easy & so good! It all started when my youngest had a b'day party
and we served it...

Breakfast Pizza

2 – 8 oz. crescent rolls
1 lb. sausage (brown, crumble, drain)
1 C. frozen shredded hash browns
1 ½ C. grated cheddar cheese
7 eggs
¼ C. milk
½ t. salt
parmesan cheese

Beat eggs, milk and salt.

Layer in a pizza pan*:
Rolls (points in & leave an edge to roll)
Sausage
Hash Browns
Cheese
Eggs
Parmesan Cheese - sprinkle on top

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 – 30 minutes. Serve with salsa!

* I use the foil disposable pizza pan because it has a higher side.

We had a 10am birthday party for my son's first birthday last year. For food we had pigs in a blanket, fresh fruit, and french toast sticks. We just had juice and water to drink. Everyone loved it, and the little kids were home in time to take a nap, and my husband, my son and I were free to enjoy the rest of the day together, stress free.

I've never made a donut cake, although that's a great idea. I have gotten creative with the cinnamon rolls in the can, and arranged them to make a cake that you just pull apart. I've put them in a circle to make a sort of kings cake for Mardi Gras, but I bet you could do it in a birthday type cake too. You've gotten some good ideas for dunut cakes to though.

I think people would appreciate having it in the morning like that because then they still have the rest of their day to do what they need. I like the idea of muffins, fruit, croissants. You have received some good ideas for your donut cake. Have fun.

I know that Krispie Kreme used to have "patterns" for stacking donuts into wedding cakes. You might ask them. Also, Coyote Park in Plano is nicely shaded on the playground. You might want to check that out, too!
Have fun!

Great Idea! Friends of mine always have a Birthday Brunch for their brood at the park--they serve fruit salad, coffee cake, some cheesy potato dish, etc. with juice and coffee. Everyone really loves it!

Krispy Kreme has you covered, too. They already make a stacked donut birthday "cake". Just call them--you know it will be a hit!

Oh, and my friends are always sure to hire a fabulous face painter. ;) They throw such an inexpensive, elegant, fun, relaxed bash!

Good luck!

I love the idea of a breakfast party in July! (and cooling off at 6pm is 95 degrees, instead of 100... not so cool) Depending on the size of the group, you might offer to pick up the kids at home and drop them off afterwards.

Sounds like you have a lot of great donut cake ideas (keep in mind, you can always use donut holes instead of whole donuts as well). A Rice Crispy Treat cake is an option as well.

Here are a few ideas for other breakfast foods...
pigs in the blanket (tiny sausages wrapped in bisquit dough or pancakes).
Lots of fruit (watermelon and grapes are great ourdoors)
Breakfast sandwiches (buscuit with sausage or bacon, and cheese - make some with eggs, some without - kids can be picky).
You can also make it very simple, and have big boxes of fun cereals, and a gallon of milk - kids would have lots of fun with that, and at the park, you don't have to worry about a mess :)

Other party ideas include:
Invitations that look like a stack of pancakes or a fried egg.
Have kids show up in PJs.
Game: use plastic easter eggs to put treats in and make a "hunt" at the park.

Good luck! Sounds like a lot of fun.

We made a tower out of donuts for a party once and you do it yourself. Make a large ring of donuts about 13 inches across, then a second layer ring gets smaller, then a third, and so on until the top is only one donut. Then we put a donut hole in the middle holding the candles and it was fun.
A recipe my grandchildren love is :
Cheesy Ham Puffs
3-4 rolls of crescent dinner rolls
1 stick butter softened
8oz. package of cream cheese
diced ham or chicken , 1 cup
2-3 Tabl. chopped fresh parsley (may be omitted)
Cream all of it together and put about 1 rounded teaspoolful in the middle of a roll and roll up sealing edges very well. Bake like the directions on the dinner roll and they are delishous warm or cool. Enjoy!
Also fresh fruit is great and kids love eating cereal with milk right inside the little individual boxes. They open on the side and you pour in the milk and give a plastic spoon. Serve with juice, fruit and the ham puffs then donuts and you have a great breakfast!
Brandi Dibler is a facepainter and loves to do childrens parties. She is very reasonable and lives in Arlington. She is on Mammasourse.

you could hold the donuts together with toothpicks or frosting. as for other foods, egg casseroles, muffins, fruit salad, croissants, and such would go over real well!

My sister had donuts on her daughters' birthday. She had the bakery spell out their names...each donut was a letter...and they were iced in different colors.

I think that a breakfast birthday party is a GREAT idea! I think a "Birthday Cake" made of stacked donuts would be fabulous! I think I would just buy a bunch of sprinkle and iced donuts early that morning and stack them on a platter then add the appropriate amount of candles. Don't forget to take a pic. of that UNFORGETTABLE cake!

Good luck! I would love to know how it turns out!

I don't have experience with this - but I love the idea and all the suggestions folks have given.

This may not be feasible out in a park, but you could stack plain donuts for the cake (with various decorations)...then have a "donut bar" setup where they could put chocolate, white or glaze icings...and then sprinkles, candies, etc. You would need to have a crock pot or something to keep the icings slightly warm so it is still "spreadable".

I've done the donut birthday cake before (twice). The kids loved it. Once I just used glazed, but the second I used all sprinkles so it was very colorful. I stacked them, like a pyramid (except round), and then put candles in the one on top. This was a frog themed party, so I randomly put the little plastic colorful frogs on the various levels also. Be sure to have your stash of boxed extras also!

I know by my house there is a donut shop called hot and creamy donuts in Trophy Club, TX. The woman who runs it, Jamma, does a wonderfully fun "Birthday Donut". I have got it for both of my daughters and they are 10 and 11. They are so yummy and it would be a great way to start the day. All she needs is a little advanced notice. I'm not sure on the cost.

We always seem to way overthink their Bday parties, and they are just happy with the snacks, friends, and presents. I would just do sprinkle donuts for everyone, and let your son have one with candles. (Kind of like having cupcakes instead of a cake....so no worries about special ordering.) You could also have pigs in a blanket (Sister Schubert in the frozen section has these pre-made and all you do is heat and bring to the park.) And do juice boxes. Then I'd add some helium balloons tied around for decor, and then let them run and play. A Bday at the park is a fun, different idea and I bet his friends love it. It is also so much fun to have a get-together in the summer when they are not all seeing each other every day!

Pull apart cinnamon roll bundt style cake.....drop chunk cut canned cinnamon rolls in bundt cake pan and bake add icing and voila'. Also, think breakfast smoothies.....bananas,stramberries,oranges, mix with yogart, icecream or milk etc...
Also, donut holes are easy to work with and shape. Also regular size donut cut in half and placed end to end amke great snake/worms. A bug theme with the donuts would be cute. Be sure to talk to your favorite donut shop.

Sounds great! For the cake, create a tower of glazed doughnut holes. Pipe colored icing in between carefully stacked layers as the tower's "glue." Add dots of icing to the top and finish with a dash of sprinkles.

I think a breakfast birthday is agreat idea to beat the heat. A lot of supermarkets do the cupcake "cakes" now so I am sure that they would also do a doughnut one for you.

Not knowing what these kids' favorite foods are, here is an idea I used with my kids. Envision a plate with 2 eggs sunny-side-up at the top as eyes. A 1/2 banana is the nose. Now 1/4 apple on each side would be the ears. Raisins can be freckles. Bacon can be the mouth. Now 1/2 piece of toast above each eye can be hair. It's an idea that lasted through all 5 of my kids. Hope it works for you.

Fiesta markets make a "Tres Leches" cake that is made with milk, creme, and cake decorated on top with fresh fruit. It tastes great and seems a bit healthier than donuts...but, maybe I'm missing the fun!

Congrats to you for coming up with this fantastic idea of the 'morning birthday' party! I love that you and everyone will have the entire day to do whatever else they might want to do. And I especially LOVE the donut cake idea - how easily inexpensive!

A breakfast party is a cute idea but I just wanted to let you know that some people may think that's too early during the summertime (kids are out of school-parents want to sleep in...). Another option would be to have the party around 6 in the evening. It's usually cooled off by then, and you could just grill some hot dogs. My sis-in-law had her son's birthday the other day at the pool, from 6:30-8:30...I think a lot of people really appreciated that. And it made the kids good and sleepy right before bed.
Hope ya'll have a good time either way! =)

I had a morning party for my daughter when she turned one. And I've had class parties in the morning too. Fruit is a great option for these parties. You can make a fruit tray with many different kinds of fruit. Minute maid has frozen soft serve lemonade, in single serve cups that you can freeze then put in an ice chest to take to the park, and then they'd be perfect to eat. For my daughter I made a "party" mix in my trifle bowl, and layered snack things all kids love: goldfish, marshmellows, pretzels, m&m's, etc. You could also do this with different cereals (kids love to snack on dry cereals for some reason). You can also do decorated cookies instead of a cake to make it easier. Hope it all goes well.

buy the doughnuts - start with a circle at the bottom and increase the heigth as you decrease the diameter - it would look sort of like the stacking ring toy that babies have. You could get an assortment of doughnuts, chocolate iced, starwberry iced, white icing, etc for each level. then place the candles around the uppermost top. Most parks have grills - so go to the camping section and get a cast irom skillet or griddle and do pancakes on the grill.
