You could take him to a park or zoo, or any place he enjoys. Give him a cupcake with a candle in it and take a picture. I believe in keeping things really simple at this age.
My son will be turning 1 on the 20th of this month..I want to do something so he has fun but having trouble thinking of things! thanx!

I agree with Sue W - pick something that you and your son enjoy, take pictures, keep it simple. Save the more elaborate ideas for when he's older.
he won't remember anything like that till he's 3 or so...
keep it simple and cheap..
have a cook out with friends and family.
play games & eat cake.
that should be sufficient for a 1 year old.
good luck
Congratulations for making it through the first year! I cried like a baby when my son turned one. sighhhh.
We had the party in the community room of a friend's building. We live in NYC so no backyard options or large apartment options either. 8( What can I say? We are not the Trumps. lol.
Anyway, we bought a blow up pool from Toys R' Us and borrowed another one from a friend. We also bought two bags of sandbox sand from them as well. The sand was $5 each, I think. We also bought a big bag of plastic balls.
We made our own sandbox and filled it with shovels and buckets and we made our own ball pit. These were a HUGE hit.
We sectioned off a corner of our space with a large foam alphabet mat and put both pools along the perimeter along with chairs for some adults to sit and supervise the children. Everyone took turns.
We brought lots of toys from home. Things like our son's musical instruments and blocks and dolls and balls and all of those other cute one year old toys. Books too....
We had helium balloons, but we picked them up the day before so the day of the party they had lost their spunk. I was kind of worried, but the little ones were able to play with them on the floor so it worked out great.
We had small cups full of either Cheerios or Gerber puffs for the kids to snack on as well as cut up strawberries and blueberries and whole bananas.
My husband made his own chicken fingers for the kids and chicken sate for the adults. We made our own salad as well. I know there was other food, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.
We had beer, wine, and champagne for the adults and sippy cups for the parents to fill with water or juice if they wished. Plus, bottled water and soda.
We had a small cake for our son to destroy and cupcakes available for the rest of the kids and adults. (Use bowls for cupcakes for the kids. Trust me on this.)
I made a playlist for my ipod using a mixture of kids music and adult music. I did not only play kids music. The mix worked great.
I spent time beforehand making collages of pictures on the computer, one for each month of my son's first year, to hang so the guests had something visual to focus on as well. I still have them. It was fun to look at the progression from newborn to one year old.
The kids all went home with Snack Traps with their names written on them as favors.

The day was awesome. All of the kids and adults had a great time and we didn't break the bank doing it.
One year old's will not remember their party so we felt that we needed to make it enjoyable for the adults as well.
Sorry to ramble. We just were so happy with how our party turned out. It was simple and easy and the kids had fun.
Congrats again and I hope you have a great party.
Peace.
honestly he won't remember it and will be tired before the end of it. Just have family over have a cake, snacks. no games let him unwrap presents and he'll play with what he gets and likely need a nap after all the activity. :)
We did a party at gymboree for my child's first and he loved it.
