Any Great Cures for a Split Lip?

My poor little one split her lip on Monday, and then she hit it again on Tuesday night. It is right in the middle of the bottom lip, and it keeps opening up again. We used coconut oil on it, but she said the smell is icky. She has been using her strawberry pot of lip balm, but I was wondering if anyone else has any great secrets on how to heal this. Normally, I would use Carmex or something similar, but it burns too much for her when she isn't hurt. Oh, and we are pushing lots and lots of liquids to heal from the inside.

Thanks so much for the help and mom tricks.

Walgreen's and CVS carry Bag Balm it's in a 3 inch green square can. Best healing stuff out there.

Carmex is not good stuff to use, it has fiberglass in it and acutally makes chapped and split lips worse.

I second Vaseline. You could also try Neutragena lip balm.

Mostly vaseline. Neosporin also has a good lip balm that doesn't burn and helps heal quickly. But at night - definitely a coat of vaseline.

yes, good old vaseline at night while they sleep. It will heal while the lip is not moving.

I would use aquafur. It's odor free and flavor free.
I use it myself when I have split lips. I keep a little sample sized container in my purse for such the case! Strange but super helpful.

I always liked the medicated Blistex but I doubt she'll like the smell of that any better :-(

Vaseline.
Albolene is great too (I get it at Walgreens) and is odorless and tasteless.

I would stay away from Carmex for open sores. I read a long time ago that it can actually make it worse. There is a lip balm my daughter loves. It is something Baby and we got it at Target. They have a bunch but this one is newer. It is by Dr something. I know that name is not very helpful but it is sold with other lipglosses and such. The tube has Baby on it. The new one is white and is supposed to be a healing lipbalm.

Lanolin ointment that is used for cracked nipples is fantastic for healing splits. It's fine for the lips too. the one I use is Lansonil, but I'm not sure if it's available in the US

If she is over a year old you can try honey. Smooth a thin layer on her lips throughout the day. Some source say to leave the honey on. Others say to let it dry and then wipe it off. We tried it once with my daughter when she had a split lip. I can't really tell you if it worked for her lips, but it did show us that she has an allergy to raw honey. Good to find out that way than if she had ingested it!
