It depends on what you want, what you are looking for and what you need.
I have used Dell for many years. I love the laptops I have had which are the XPS series. I run my business on my laptop.
My daughter's first computer was a Dell Latitude and it is at least 6 yrs old and still works, just slow.
We have purchased the Dell products directly from Dell and had good experiences. I do have a warranty plan where they will come to my house in 24 hrs and make any necessary repairs.
Best Buy is a good place to get computers. They have a lot of brands and can match you for what you need. I think my nephew got a computer for graduation for $500 this past year. It works for him for this first year of college.
When our daughter started Sr High School as a Junior, we got her the MacBook Pro. She loves it... it was not cheap but she is currently in her first year of college and this machine is still going strong with no issues whatsoever.
My thoughts are..... good idea for refurbished Dell. Best Buy and buy the most you can afford. Sometimes if you get the last machine, you get a discount due to no box, etc. Sometimes an off brand is a good machine for someone who uses it for personal purposes. Sometimes places like Staples have great deals on new laptops. Staples also has a good support system for any repairs or guidance.
I don't know about Black Friday. We don't participate in that because they are going to get you, one way or another, and the "deals" are truly few and far between. It is not worth my time. Just like tax free day... it is no deal... so you save the state tax... items are not on "sale" and they are at listed pricing. You can save more money another time when a full discount is in effect.
We just got a convertible laptop and love it! Its a tablet and laptop in one. We ended up getting the Sony Vaio. If you are looking for BF deals, there are several websites where they post BF ads that retailers post prior to BF. Try Blackfriday.com
I don't know about black Friday but Lenovo is making great machines.

If you are game for Windows 8, I've seen a lot of models every week for less than $300. Of course I think some of the new ones do not have the CD/DVD rom drive so you need to look at specs to make sure you're getting everything you need. Check the store ads in your area to see what is offered.
