Any Dentists Have an Opinion About This...?

Somehow, after years of great teeth, I have ended up with 8 cavities, 2 possible root canals. I'm guessing all that chocolate I craved, combined with genetic factors, and a possible lack of calcium during my last pregnancy, is what contributed. In any case, I just saw a dentist and she did a full set of x-rays about two months ago and did the first root canal. I don't like her at all and am switching to someone new...the new dentist said he prefers to take another set of x-rays and said not to be too concerned because it's not a health hazard and is like spending 15 minutes in the sun. He's super sweet and super experienced, but I don't know...

What can I do next?

I'm not a dentist but... that sounds fishy to me. What does he expect to have changed in two months? Unless he wants a different view, maybe. Good luck to you!

On a new visit I have ALWAYS had dental Xrays done, it is part of their procedure and part of what they want on file. Everyone wants things done their way, your new dentist is no exeption.

If you want him digging around in your mouth without a map, then nix the xray. :)

Please tell me her name is not Dr Blumofe. If is it, PM me. FISHY dentist :)

I'd talk to your insurance co and tell them that you'd like a 2nd opinion on all this dental work that has been ordered for you by Dentist A. Ask them if they will cover x-rays from Dentist B so that you can see if the work is actually indicated. Do NOT tell Dentist B what Dentist A says was wrong.

From our experience, dental care is littered with unethical doctors all over. Somehow they get away with it, whereas a medical doctor would lose their license.

Yeah, he's right. Dental x-rays use very low doses of radiation. Each dentist likes to use their own x-rays. Very common.

But I would definitely check to be sure that your insurance covers it. Let the doc know that if your insurance doesn't cover it, you're not paying for new x-rays when you already provided some.

I wouldn't worry about radiation from a dental xray. It is one of the lowest doses you can get, less than you get flying in a plane. Here is an informative website with radiation doses for common procedures.

This doesn't answer your question, but you may find it interesting & educational :) You can HEAL your cavities and prevent them through diet/nutrition.

The thing I would be concerned about is I would imagine insurance would not cover it. I know I can just get a full set of x-rays once a year. That might be a lot of "out of pocket" expense that doesn't seem necessary.
