Any Babies with Flat Spots?

Hi I became concerned recently with the flat spot on the back of my four month old son's head. His doctor said that it wasn't too bad, but referred us to a crainial specialist. They basically told us it was up to us, there would be no medical need for him to wear a helmet...just cosmetics. He would have to wear it for 23 hours a day for about 3 months. We went back to the doctor with the photographs and stats from the specialist, and they said no helmet was necessary. So we are not doing the helmet, but I am still concerned about the spot. Now finally my question: are there any other babies that have flat spots? What are you mommies doing to prevent them from getting worse? Any ideas or suggestions would help. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi Racehl,

Our son had a flat spot on the back of his head and it was simply from him laying on his head because he slept so much. Our pedi said to just keep him upright as much as possible instead of letting him lay down when he's awake. We bought him a Bumbo seat and let him sit in his space saver chair more often. The flat spot eventually went away (although it did take several months still).

I would go see a cranial cranial therapist..
Dr. Gerken in Chula vista is great.

way better than wearing a helmet or a flat head.

Try and have him sleep on his side for naps if you can. When in a car seat or bouncer, stroller etc, you can get a "head pillow" that kinda looks like a donut....Boppy and Pottery Barn make them - it keeps the back of the head from touching the back of whatever they are laying on. I had one of these in all of our car seats and bouncers and swings (you can also just move it around), and it really seemed to work- 2 of my best friends kids almost got the helmets, so I was extra careful with my son. GOOD LUCK I am sure he will be fine- my friends kids son's are 1 1/2 years old and you can't even tell now, it's not that big a deal unless it's really really really bad and it doesn't sounds like it is for you son so I wouldn't worry too much, just take some extra care and it will be fine :)
