Antibiotics During Pregnancy

My 3 yo was just diagnosed with strep. She has been sick for a week, and needless to say I have been exposed. I am 18 wks pregnant and my OB wants met to take antibiotics as a precaution. Has anyone been in the same situation? Just wanted to get some reassurance about it, and find out if there is anything like side effects I should be aware of.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the responses. I fortunately don't have any symptoms yet, but decided to take the antibiotics. It is so nice to know there are other women who have had to face the same decisions. I appreciate your advice and support!

Let me tell you I work at a child care center and the one semester I was pregnant the children in the room were diagnosed with crop. This is a highly contagious disease. It is worst for moms who are pregnant. So they insisted that I be put on antibiotics. I was to afraid. Everyone is different, but that med made me so sick. I never had morning sickness. But that stuff made my stomach cramp the entire time. I eventually took it only at night while I slept, so I didn't feel the pain. It was horrible. I too was scared about taking it for the baby's sake. But he came out just fine. He is now 2yrs old and still doing great.

My oldest got strep when I was just starting my second trimester of pregnancy. I asked his pediatrician what my risk was and she said to wait and see. If I developed symptoms, I wasn't to hesitate at all to get into a doctor for a scrip, but otherwise there was no reason for me to take antibiotics unnecessarily. I also mentioned it to my midwife the next time I saw her and she agreed with what the pedi. had to say. Food for thought.

This may seem strange, but I do not take antibiotics anymore for anything. You can eat 9-12 cloves of fresh garlic to get an antibiotic "effect" without the possibility of side effects. Garlic is 16 times as strong as penicillin (sp?) - it has been uses for thousands of years as an antibiotic AND antiviral without killing off your good bacteria in your gut (which causes an overgrowth of yeast). Hope this helps educate a bit!

Hi E.!

I had my daugher 1 month & 3 days early. I was sitting in the hospital for 11 days before she came. They had me on antibiotics once every 6 hours the entire time I was there. I never take any kind of medicine @ all & was a little worried about it myself. I didn't have any side affects @ all & the baby was just fine. I was considered high risk & @ a high risk for infection which is why they did that. You'll be just fine!! :)

You probably got a lot of responses already but antibiotics are really fine. I had my 4th (and last:) baby 1 month ago and it seemed that every pregnancy I came down with something and needed to take them. I am suprised he prescribed it without you having strep but it is better to not get that!!!

I can reasure you that taking the antibiotics is ok, esp if you have the symptoms! If you are not running a fever or have a sore throat I would talk it over with your OB first! I work on a well known Labor and Delivery floor in a large St. Louis hospital and I can tell you that antibiotics are ok as long as you ok them with your OB! In fact there are many cases everyday that we have to give them by IV during delivery! Hope this was helpful and just remember that strep is more dangerous left unattended than treated!

I was not exposed to strep during my last pregnancy, but I was bitten by a cat when I was 14 wks. I went to the emergency room, and the Doctor there gave me antibiotics after consulting with an OB/GYN. He was concerned because I was less than 16 wks, and told me if I had been more than 16 wks, he would have written the scrip without a 2nd thought. So I think that you should be fine. Batter safe than sorry. Strep is awful. Hope it helps.

Hi E.,

I took antibiotics during both of my pregnancies because of strep, it was really bad, and I have two wonderful and healthy kids now (2 and 8 years old). I was so scared and thought about the worst things happening to my babies, but my doctor told me that after 12 weeks, the baby is perfectly "mature" for me to take antibiotics. Also, my Ob/GYn told me that the risk of problems or damage to my baby would be higher if I did not take the antibiotics. So, you will be fine. They know what kind of antibiotics can give you. Everything is ging to be OK.
Take care yourself so that your baby is OK

E., I took antibiotics during pregnancy and didn't have any problems. I took them due to a dog bite (I got bit in the face and had to have 20 stitches in my nose). The question that my husband asked the doctor was "if it was your pregnant wife would you give her the antibiotics" and the doctor said yes. We also checked with my OB. I had no problems and the risk from the dog bite was greater than the risk from the antibiotics. So that is how we looked at it, where was my greater risk. My daughter is now a healthy 6 year old. Good luck!

During my second pregnancy, I was pretty much sick my entire first trimester with what ended up being pneumonia. At first, my doctor just thought I had a cold and everything else was just early pregnancy symptoms. After about of month of this (plus a trip to the ER) my doctor finally decided there was more going on but by that time, I was so sick, I couldn't get out of bed. I can tell you I was on at least 3 different types of antibiotics, as well as codine (which I was terrified to take, but was assured by many doctors it would be safe). I was really nervous about taking all these medications, especially since I had only taken maybe a few tylenol throughout my first pregnancy. My little guy was born perfectly healthy in January. I hope that makes you feel better, and good luck!

Hi E.,

I had a few sinus infections during my pregnancy ans was given Amoxicillin. My OB explained to me that that was the only antibiotic approved for pregnancy. My Ear. nose and throat physician also told me that. I am not sure if that is what they would treat for strep though. There might be a restriction of antibiotics in the first trimester, but I think I was in my first trimester when I had my first sinus infection during the pregnancy. I think I was 10 weeks? I think the second and third trimesters are ok, but only Amoxicillin. That is all the doctors would prescribe. My ENT and OB always consulted with one another to make sure they were on the same page in protecting my baby. I hope this has been of some help to you. Good luck. Take care.

I took antibiotics when I was about 8 weeks along with my DD. I took the Z-Pack. My daughter is perfectly fine, and I got better! I didn't have any side effects. There are some antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy. I know that tetracycline & antibiotics like it are NOT safe during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about your concerns, but I'm sure you'll be just fine.

You have to compare the risks of both and choose which one is the lesser of 2 evils. This goes with any medical condition that you need medication for while you're pregnant. Your doctor will assess which one would harm you and your fetus more and go with the safer choice.

I got a spider bite during my second pregnancy, and was told by two different doctors, one being my OB, that antibiotics don't really affect the baby. You might want to get some acidophilus, and take it if you have to take antibiotics. That's the good kind of bacteria, and antibiotics make you more prone to get a yeast infection. The acidophilus will replace what the antibiotics take away. Hope this helps, and congrats on your new baby.

I think that the risk of strep during pregnancy is much higher and harmful on the baby then the risk of taking an antibiotic. You can also go to a great website safefetus.com. It tells you what risk it has.

When I was pregnant with my youngest, my oldest got sick, and I was starting to get a cold etc.. a week or two before my due date, so my PCP put me on antibiotics so I'd be clear for delivery! All is well... Good Luck!
