Antibiotic Question

Dont know what BV is but keflex is usually prescribed for a skin infection. I had a mole removed once. The area became infected and they gave me Keflex. Also got an infection in my ear piercing and they gave me Keflex.

If the doctor said you had an infection in your scar and also had bacterial vaginosis then I suggest it's for both things. Why does it matter which it's for or that it be for only one? I suggest you call the doctor if you're anxious about taking an antibiotic.

I think I've had keflex but I'm not sure. At 70 I've taken many different kinds for several different kinds of infections and never had any problems with them.

I googled keflex and it's for a bacterial infection. So, I'd think it's for the bacterial vaginosis. However, if you also have an infection in your scar and it's bacterial it will help that also.

I went back and looked at your previous post concerning your c-section scar. If it's not infected, i.e. red, swollen, oozing pus, then the keflex is for the bacterial vaginosis.

Of course antibiotics are only for bacterial infections but in the past it's been common for doctors to give antibiotics when the cause of the infection is unknown. I suggest that since keflex is a newer antibiotic it's description is more complete.

Is your concern that you don't need the keflex? If so, talk with your doctor.

Perhaps you're really sensitive to these issues because this is your first baby and your first surgery. That's a lot to adjust too all at once. I want you to know that I'm 99.9% certain that you are OK. I suggest that you try stopping yourself from worrying by telling yourself, out loud, if necessary that you are OK. Just say, "I am OK," as many times as needed to help yourself feel better.

I've had 3 abdominal surgeries and remember that I was anxious with the first one. I had a room mate in the hospital who showed me her abdominal scar as she reassured me about the surgery. Those scars really do heal just fine. They may look odd or bad and they do feel painful but they do heal in a few months and look more OK.

Keflex is a broad spectrum antibiotic which means that it is used to treat many different kinds of bacterial infections. It is possible that your doctor chose Keflex because it will treat the infection in you incision as well as your BV.

FYI: It is a good idea to take a probiotic 2 X daily while on antibiotics to prevent diarrhea. It should be taken while taking and X 14 days after the antibiotic is completed - Check with your doctor and make sure that it is OK for you to take a probiotic before starting. (Probiotics are also found in yogurt)

If you have an infection on your wound from your c-section - Keflex is a cephalexin med - it fights bacteria and is mainly used for ear infections as well as sinus infections. in some cases, it can be used on skin infections.

BV - otherwise known as bacterial vaginosis (what i would call a bacterial yeast infection) can be treated with antibiotics such as Keflex - however - topical ointments such as metronidazole can be used as well.

You need to call your doctor and ask exactly what she is administering the Keflex for. Or you can call the pharmacist who filled the prescription and see if he/she has any more information.

There is NOTHING an antibiotic will do for a scar.

K-Flex is an easy to use general antibiotic that should be a good one for most any infection going on. If it is a capsule then I suggest you put water in your mouth and lean your head forward to make it float to the back of your throat. Then swallow the water down. I always have to eat something like a piece of bread right away because capsules tend to float back up my throat. But it really seems that K-Flex is the worst. Maybe they make it with extra air inside. I just have to make it float to the back then eat something to get it all the way down and stay there.

K-Flex is broad spectrum antibiotic, so you were prescribed that one because you have two infections. It's treating both infections. When your dr said, "I'm giving you an antibiotic for both infections," she meant she'd be giving you ONE antibiotic to treat both infections.

What were you thinking? That the doctor would give you one antibiotic for each infection?

Flagyl is typically prescribed for BV. I've had Keflex for sinus infections. Is your C-section scar infected?

I'm not quite sure I understand your question. Antibiotics fight infection. If you have more than one infection, the antibiotic will fight both. Also, it's possible you would be prescribed a slightly higher dose because there are two infections.

Why do you feel like you did something wrong not asking specifically which infection your OB was intending to treat? Had you thought to ask, I'm sure your OB would have said it was for both.

Also, you didn't say whether you actually had an infection in your c-section scar. If you do not but there is some concern that you could develop one, a doctor might prescribe an antibiotic as a preventative measure.

Can you please let us know what you mean by BV?
Did your doctor not tell you what he was prescribing an antibiotic for? I find it highly unlikely that your doctor gave you an antibiotic without telling you what type of infection you have.

Ask your dr if you can take probiotics, too.
I purchase probiotics from a quality health food store w/ a nutritionist and or dr on staff there.

After both of my C-Sections they put me on Keflex or the generic anyway, to make sure that no infection took hold. I didn't have any. But, last time I had a sinus infection and a UTI the doctor put me on it. I think it should cure what you have and PREVENT any others from starting. For my surgeries it was precautionary.
