Ant Problem - La Junta,CO

I need advice on getting rid of these annoying ants! We haven't ever had a problem with ants in the kitchen. Last summer we did spot some in the living room but it really never became a problem. A few days ago I went into the kitchen and discovered ants all over my floor-just the floor. So I got rid of all of them and scrubbed my floor really well. The next day they had returned to the counter. I keep my house really clean and I try to keep my counters and floors wiped down at all times. Last night before I went to bed I went to turn the light off in the kitchen and they had returned AGAIN to the floor. This time I set up a trap (liquid dish soap and Lysol 3in1 cleaner) in the places I thought they were coming in. Sure enough-this morning I found a bunch dead in the liquid in the places I put it. I also bought some RAID-Ant & Roach Killer today. We sprayed it in the spots and along the base boards, doorways, and windows. I haven't seen anymore today, but I'm really worried about spraying and even the remedy I used because of my 2-year-old daughter. She's constantly playing on the floor or if she drops something that she's eating she'll pick it right up and stick it in her mouth. She saw the ants so she knows that there are "bugs" in the kitchen and she can't touch where mommy put the poison. Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Hi Kim,

We had an ant problem outside and I talked to a friend of mine that grew up on a ranch. We had been using some of the harsh chemicals as well and it wasn't working as well as we'd hoped. Anyway, my friend told me to buy a large bottle of generic cinnamon from the store and sprinkle some wherever you see them. I'm not kidding by the next day they were completely gone and I haven't seen them since! I eventually cleaned up the cinnamon after a few days and haven't seen them all summer. I hope this helps and good luck.

You could try sprinkling oregano around where they want to come in. They won't go over it. We've used it with great success. The only down side we found is it looks like it isn't clean, since you have the oregano spread around. I found leaving it for about a week worked, and then I could clean it up.

Kim-this is what I woke up to last THursday morning! I detected them coming in from the garage door and they were between the baseboards and tack strip where my carpet and kitchen floor meet. I vaccuumed over and over and then bought some Max Defense spray Inside/Outside Ant killer and sprayed around the baseboards and also outside the door. Then of course we left the house for a number of hours just in case the flumes were too strong. I haven't seen anymore in the house (knock on wood. Yesterday when I got home from work, the garage was covered in them-I had left a garbage bag full in the garage and they must of been hungry.

I have also heard about grub control-to put that down and it works too-just make sure the kids cannot get into it. Good luck!

if you live where you can crawl under your house, put ant poison under your house and around it.no matter what, around it.

Kim, we too had a major ant problem along with an ear-wig problem (yuck!). I tried all the stuff you can buy at the store but was really worried about having my kids around it all the time. I now go with a professional service here where I live that I love. Yes, it's a little bit more that what you would spend buying it at the store, but the stuff they use is safe for humans and is more of a natural thing and they do inside and out. We don't even have to leave when they spray and I don't have a problem anymore! If I do see anything, bugs of any kind, they will come back and spray again, no charge. I love them!

We had a similar problem. There are safe sprays for kids and pets out there. They are just hard to find. I would recommend getting one and spray at night~also spray outside. We also use Borax outside too. That works great to put near anthills and doorways so the ants take it down and eat it. Also, there are Black and Decker things that you plug into outlets that keep ant and other bugs away. And those are safe for dogs/cats and kids. Those work excellent too.

We had ants in one of the bathrooms in our last home. I found a crack in the caulk where they were coming in. I re-caulked the spot and had no more ant issues.

We've struggled with ants too. Try to find their home, not just where they are coming in. A good non-toxic solution is red pepper blended in water. Just take a bit of red pepper, water, and stick it in the blender until the water is red with pepper dust and spray it/pour it around their home and the entrances to your house. This kills them and won't hurt you or any plants, but BEWARE! Don't go spraying it around inside your house because you won't be able to breath (it's just like pepper spray). It is very effective, though. Once I used the stuff, the ants were gone for the rest of the season. Good luck.
