I've never needed a photo id but have frequently needed to show either a birth certificate or a shot record for my kids.
Southwest's site says I'll need a birth certificate for the baby & photo ID for the three & eight year olds. What the heck kind of photo ID does a child have & where am I supposed to get it?
Just called Southwest & was told a copy of the birth certificate or immunization record will suffice for all three. Easy peasy.

Southwest did ask for proof of birth for my 4 month old two weeks ago. I gave them the hospital discharge form and that was sufficient. If you need a photo id, check with the state of Texas and see if they do photo ids at the DMV, I know they did in Maryland. I know you can get them a passport, but that can be expensive.
We've travelled for years, all over the place with our 14 yr old and never been asked for an id for her. The TSA agent just asks "what's your name", "where are you going" and "is this your mom".
For the last 4 yrs, we take one of daughter's friends with us on vacation and they have to show no id.
I was told to bring a birth certificate for each of my kids when we flew Southwest. My son was 5 months and my daughter was 3 years. My son was a lap baby and my daughter had a seat. At the ticket counter they gave me a special pass for my son (lap baby), but they never even looked at either birth certificate.
I know this doesn't exactly answer your question, but I hope it helps.
You can get a photo id for your kids at the place where you get your driver's license. I haven't needed them when I flew American and Spirit. Why don't you call Southwest to confirm?
