We have both the ds and the didj and the didj never gets played. The ds is well worth the money. maybe wait til the day after thanksgiving and they might be on sale, just a thought
My oldest is 6, we were thinking of getting her the leap frog didj. she would really like a DS but i am not about to spend $130 on a game system for a 6 year old. Are the didj worth it, anyone have any experience with them?
Thanks everyone. We decided to do the DS. We found a used one at Game Stop for $89. My daughter will have a great Christmas now, it is all she has been talkng about for 2 years now. This gift will be from mom and dad, we don't want Santa getting the credit for this one lol

We had the same dilemma last year...we did end up getting 2 of our girls, who are now 7 & 8, the didj's. They both love them. They're fun and educational. We've found that it was a good buy! :-)
WOW you were reading my mind, my just turned 6 year old asked me last night if santa would bring him a DS and I said that I thought a LEAP FROG didi would be better. He didn't have much to say about that but, I am curious to see if its worth it. The DS has kid games and then they could grow into the older games.
That way another game syystem doesn't have to be purchased in a couple years.
How many different games does the LF game system have?
Please let me know what some people say, so it will help this SANTA make the choice.
THank you , Cindy
I agree with the others. The DS is the way to go. We finally caved at a month before 7. One thing I have learned. Rent the games, don't buy them unless your child absolutely loves it. Mine enjoys a game for about 1 week, then will not touch it again for a month or so. The games are pricy. The other option, is to get an exchange going with friends, so you don't realize 2 years from now you have spent $300 on 10 games.
You should go ahead & get the DS! It has great educational games for younger kids, too! Then, you won't need to buy ANOTHER hand-held as she gets older. They are amazing games! My two kids absolutely love them. My son got his when he turned 4!! Trust me on this...they are great and WELL worth the investment.
Yes the DS is expensive but it is well worth it. It's great in the car, great at the grocery store (you won't have to buy a toy) etc... Plus your child is getting to the age where all of his friends will have one and he will want one so you will then have two systems. Just a thought. My son goes in stages where he plays it alot and then he doesn't. He is 6 and all of his friends have it. Good luck.
We have the DS lite. I was told the only difference is that the more expensive one has a camera on it where you can take pictures. I didn't see the point to it. Watch and you can get it for $119 when it goes on sale.
I can totally understand if you do not change your mind, but for my son's 6th birthday I purchased a Nintendo DS and so far it has far exceeded the usefulness of the Leapster L-Max that I purchased for him before.
There are many age-appropriate games for the DS and it's not just a lot of useless video games. He will be 7 in a couple weeks and has Brain Quest for DS. It is geared towards Grades 3 & 4 but he's enjoyed learning through the game. There are also memory games for children and adults.
The game is very durable and believe is one of those things that you can invest in and will have some "life".
(If this were a question about the PSP - Playstation handheld game then I would agree with not spending the extra money because the system is geared towards teens & adults.)
Hi L., Both my daughter have a DS. My 10 yr old has the Dsi and my almost 7 yr old has the original DS. If you look on sites like ebay and craigslist you can find a DS for below the regular price. I think the DS is worth the money. With the Didj your daughter will out grow it and I am not sure about the games for it. With the DS there are even adult games (that you will buy to play while she is in bed) Well that is what I do. Any way I would go with the Ds for sure. Hope this helps.

My son got a Didj for his 5th birthday last month and he loves it.
I am not sure how much the leapfrog system is but you can get a used DS online at half.com for around 80. Might be worth looking into. Just a suggestion.
