Another Gallbladder Question....

On Saturday my gallbladder (I think) was acting up pretty badly, and I haven't eaten since! Well, then again, I cooked some food on the BBQ, had two bites of a sausage and a couple mouthful's of potato salad, and all hell broke loose once again. I'm TERRIFIED to eat.

I don't have a family doctor, but I'm going to find a doctor to go to today. If anyone had this type of pain you'll know that it is HELL on Earth. It doesn't hurt that bad right now, but I drank some water and it's starting to rumble and cramp along with a lot of belching.

So I have two questions. Should I go to the ER (I'm not in serious pain...yet) or the doctor? Should I eat or get some medical attention before I do that? I'm hungry but scared :-(

What can I do next?

I have had GB pain, which usually includes the liver.. When your GB begins to hurt, it's pretty certain that your Liver which is right there close by will also be affected.. What works for me.. Laying off the fatty foods and watching my diet. Simply put, losing weight.. I know some doctors will opt for taking it out, but that needn't always happen IF a person can get their diet on point. If you look online, there is a lot of info with regard to fatty diets and GB disease, in turn, I have also read that if you have issues with the GB, it's can in some cases be a predecessor of things to come such as heart disease.. the GB acting as a the warning sign that your diet may not be as healthy as it can be... Since keeping my own diet on point and losing weight, those GB aches (and liver) are much fewer. In fact, it's been a long time since I had an attack.

As for eating. whenever I have had an attack... later on in the day, I ate basic.. no fats/sugars.. kept it clean.. your GB/LIVER are filtering systems, so the less junk you give them to filter, the less problems they will have.. start out slowly and don't overwhelm either.. again, if you look online, you ll see what foods in particular can upset the GB...

good luck to you!

First off.....to let you know I am a doctor and I have been there twice in the last eight months.
Drink 8 oz of organic apple juice with a 1/4 cup of organic apple cider vinegar....that should calm it down. Then as soon as possible do this purge.
For 5 days, drink 1/2 gallon of pure apple juice each day. You can eat whatever you want.....(I would suggest you stay away from meat and dairy as that irritates the gallbladder) on the 6th day mix 24 oz of water with 4 T. of epsom salts. At 6 p.m. and 8 p.m drink 6 oz of the solution. Then at 10 p.m., drink 4 oz of olive oil. Then again at 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., drink 6 oz of the epsom salt solution. I put fresh lemon juice and stevia in with the epsom salts and lemon juice with the olive oil and drink with a straw in the back of your throat to avoid the taste buds as much as possible.
The apple juice softens the gallstones, the epsom salts open the bile ducts and the oil makes your gallbladder squirt out the stones.
You will be amazed how many stones will come and sometimes quite big. You should be done around 1 or 2 in the afternoon. And....you will feel so much better. Be prepared to do it again in 2 months and every two months until you are pretty clear of stones. Then you can do it once a year.
Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Please consider going to a gastro doc. That is what you need at this time. IF it is something to do with that tract they will be able to diagnose this and you can be done with it.

I can tell you that once mine came out I could drink OJ and keep it down, I usually burped it up for days after drinking it.

I could eat fatty foods, I know, they told me I would never be able to again, my tummy went the other way.

They told me to go with fat free foods like salad dressing and things that would normally have a lot of fat in them. I got diarrhea from the artificial goo they use for fake fat. I use real milk, real Hidden Valley Buttermilk Ranch Dressing. I use real butter too.

I had mine taken out laparoscopically. It was very easy. I had it done emergency surgery on Monday and was back at work as a nanny on Thursday. I didn't make it the full day but was back the full day the next day.

I didn't even take one pain pill. It just felt so much better that no amount of pain was an annoyance.

Get this taken care of. It could be any number of things. My hubby had Diverticulitis from eating a Big Mac, one of the sesame seeds got stuck. He also has gallbladder sludge. He also has the occasional kidney stone, he has had open heart surgery for a quadruple bypass, he says the gallbladder is second to the kidney stones.

Any gastro doc will do, they should do some tests, perhaps X-rays, sonograms/ultrasounds, maybe even go in through the hiney and take a look around. Who knows but they should be able to find the cause of this very quickly if it is indeed in that area.

Do you have to have a referral in order for your insurance to cover going to a specialist? If you don't, call a gastroenterologist's office. Talk to them. I believe this is the specialist you would see for gallbladder trouble. The nurse in the office could give you advice for today while she tries to work you in.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Please let us know how things go!

Don't go to the ER unless your in pain. They usually wont do anything with out it unfortunately. Plus it costs more to go to the ER than it would going to a family dr.

You should be able to call any clinic that you have been associated with in the past ( if they have chains) or really any clinic and tell them that you are a new patient and what has been going on. Since something is going on ( the gull bladder pain) they should be able to get you in with in the next week.

Until your appt eat bland foods! The grease from the sausage and the starch from the potatoes is what kicked it in. From here on out eat non greasy/ non starchy food ( for some reason lettuce kicked mine in also, so maybe just to be safe avoid that also) and you should be ok. Too much caffeine can kick it in also, so make sure you limit that ( coffee, pop, chocolate...) Try not to have a completely empty stomach, the acid in my stomach from an empty stomach would also kick my attacks in.

Hopefully they can see you soon and a simple ultrasound will be able to tell them if it is your gull bladder or not even if your not having an attack. Then refer you to a surgeon to get it taken care of once and for all.

Also just a heads up... when my attacks would get REALLY bad... I would make myself throw up, it got the acid out and felt better almost instantly.

Yes the attacks are some of the painful things I have had to deal with! I had to wait 2 weeks for my surgery.. my mom had to wait a month before she could get it. Thankfully your diet plays a big roll in it so you can control it for the most part! Hope you feel better soon

If you know it's your gallbladder, don't go to the ER. I mean, the ER is for emergencies, so if you were having severe abdominal pain didn't know why, that would be an emergency. Or if you're in such bad pain you cannot take it, you could go to the ER (although people who go to the ER for pain/meds usually wait forever because people think they're drug-seeking).

If it's you know it's your gallbladder, you really should go to a gastroenterologist. You may need to start with a family physician/internist to get a referral, and they can help somewhat, but the GI is really the expert.

My family doctor told me to stay away from fatty foods after I had had a painful gallbladder attack. She knew from the description of my symptoms over the phone that I was having gallbladder problems. Her diagnosis was confirmed with tests at the hospital. I was terrified of having another episode of pain so I watched my diet very carefully. My gallbladder was removed during laparoscopic surgery five months later; because I ate a stringent lowfat diet, I had no further symptoms and I was able to schedule the surgery at a time that suited my schedule.

My advice? Eat carefully (lowfat) and make an appointment with a doctor ASAP so that you can find out for sure what is wrong and how to handle it.
