Another Chickenpox ?

My 8.5 mth old and my 2.5 yr old ''may have been exposed' to chickenpox 2 sundays ago while in the church nursery. Yesterday (day 12) , my 8.5mth old had a fever of 101.00 all day long, was horribly cranky, even vomited once (but that was when his fever spiked to 102), and so I was expecting to wake up this morning to find him covered in pox. Appears to be fine this morning just a little bit irritable, but no fever yet, and is actually able to sit up. Yesterday, he didn't want to attempt it. So I'm wondering if I'm in the clear? He just had some other virus and since he's better today it's not CP related? Or is there a chance he could still break out with a rash in the next two days?

The only reason I'm asking is because tomorrow both boys are suppose to be Dedicated at church, and we have family coming out, and I just don't want to tell everyone its on. Only to find out tomorrow he has CP, and we have to cancel!! I was reading on the internet and they said the rash usually appears 24 hrs after the fever? Is that what all you moms have experienced? Or could it be 2-3 days or do they run a fever the whole time? I'm confused a disappointed this is all had to occur right around their Dedication, its been scheduled for over a month :( But also I don't want to get people at church sick, or even any of our family members. So far the 2.5 yr old has been fine (but he was vaccinated). although, he's still asleep so I don't know at today :) Thoughts anyone...

TIA

chicken pox leave knots behind the ears if there is no knots behind the ears may be something else. If you need to find out for sure in a short amount of time take them to the park in the heat of the day if it is chicken pox the heat will break them out. this is how we did it before the vaccine come out. now as far as the dedication at church anyone who has already had the chicken pox is going to be immune to it unless they had a light case. then they can get it again. this is why when my oldest was little before the vaccine come out we would put them in the sun to make sure they got it good enought not to get it again. if they do have it buy a plastic swimming pool and fill it with baking soda water the baking soda keeps them from itching and the sun makes sure they don't get it again. get lots of calamine lotion if they do have it. NO TYLENOL.

I've always heard that the thing to do is to keep the child warm so that if it is the chicken pox, he will break out and get it over with. I'm assuming the little one has either not had the vaccine yet, or has not completed the series is why you are thinking he may be getting the disease. I know it's an inconvenience and a bit annoying, but I think I'd call the Dr. for advice, and then would be on the safe side and re-schedule the dedication. Even if your son doesn't break out, he may be carrying the virus and you could expose someone who wasn't already exposed two weeks ago. You also may be prolonging your son's illness by getting him out too soon.

You probably want to call your doctor and consult him/her by phone. I'm so sorry. It's hard to know what to do, but there are adults (like pregnant women) who may never have had chicken pox, so you do want to be careful. Let your doc help you make a decision.

Call his pedi to get a professional opinion, but my understanding of vaccinated children being exposed is that they might get a very mild case of the illness (perhaps what your boy has already experienced and is on the mend from) but not the full blown two weeks of rashes and years of scars like when we were kids.

It might be that he has it and that's as bad as it was going toget or it could be something completely different. The truth is, without blood work there is no way to know. A doctor can only guess without testing. A fever and lethargy could be any virus/ bacteria under the sun and if you have bloodwork today it is unlikely that you'd know in enough time to cancel the dedication.

I am someone who is very cautious about not spreading the pathogens we carry and not being around sick people, but I don't worry about CP for my kids' sakes. They are vaccinated and since I work from home I could handle the illness if they got it. But this is important: if there is anyone pregnant who was to come to the dedication, tell her to stay home, and her family, too. CP can cause birth defects and misscarriage. You can't risk that. Elderly folks can have a hard time with it, too, if they did not have it already.

I would see what is temp is like in the evening and decide based on that. If he seems better and goes into the night with a 99-100 fever then I'd keep it on (still exluding anyone expecting a child and keeping older unexposed folks at arm's length if they decide to come), if it seems any worse than that I would cancel.
