Annoyed

I overheard one of my bosses referring to me as "What's her face". What the heck. I've heard her do it to other people as well so I'm trying not to take it personally...maybe it's just her way of talking when the name eludes her. Am I overreacting? I'm just annoyed. Do you think it's a derogatory way of talking about someone?

What can I do next?

How does she treat you otherwise? That would be the determining factor, in my opinion.

Is she otherwise respectful and have manners, or is she demanding, thankless and rude? If the former, let it go. You are probably exactly right, that the name escapes her. If the latter, you probably need to start a job search. =)

Life is too short to let this upset you. Don't sweat the small stuff - and much of it is small. The big stuff is losing someone you love, having your house burn down or your child run away - stuff like this should't even register on your scale. This boss is a knucklehead - let it go.

I can understand your frustration - try not to take it personally.....it is more of a reflection on her than it is on you! She is unprofessional!!

Calm down- she didn't refer to you that way in person and this is how she "buys time" to recall someone's name. No, it's rude to not know the names of individuals who report directly to you and generally considered bad practice, but it's not derogatory.

I only use "what's her face" if I'm not really fond of someone. If she treats you well otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. But yeah it would annoy me too.

It's rude and it's a time-buyer but it's not derogatory. She should have said something like, "Blah blah blah, oh... I forget her name... um... S.S. and then blah blah blah blah." I'd be annoyed too but wouldn't get worked up over it.

You have the right to be annoyed. But you should let it go. It's not big enough to let it get you down. People are morons. Jeez!!!

I think it depends on the context and the tone of the converstation. If it was snarky and dismissive, then it's definitely derogatory. But if it was lighthearted and truly just a 'slip', then I wouldn't take offence.

I've been known to refer to people as 'what's her/his pickle' when I really can't think of the name *right* away!

I think it is derogatory.

I mean, it is not like you are the lady standing behind her in line at a fast food joint. You work with her, she is your boss...she should know you by name, and if she does not yet she should try to get to know you by name. To me, that is the virtue of a good boss. I think that using a term like that, especially in a work setting, is a sign of a careless boss. At least say, "what is her name again?" to demonstrate that you trying to recall her name. That is the much more professional thing to do.

In the meantime, you can try to bring more attention to your work, to encourage her to get to know you more, if you have not already done so.

Just start wearing one of those "Hello My Name Is" stickers. Maybe she'll get the hint :)

She sounds like a crappy boss with absolutely no people skills. Ugh.

If she does this consistently I would not take it personally. Learn to chuckle, and find creative ways to introduce your name and other employee's names into conversation with her.

God Bless

I would go out of my way to be sure she (and every one else) knows your name. It's going to be hard to get recognition for your efforts if the chick doesn't even know your name. Create a signature on your email and add your picture. Start emailing her status updates on your work load, any ideas you might have for improvement, and volunteer for side projects. Leave her sticky notes on anything you turn in to her with your name on them. "Completed 5/31/11 by S___" Buzz her phone and start every conversation with - hey this is S_____ or S_____ here. Sooner or later she has got to know your name! If all that doesn't work, try on a more personal level. Invite her to happy hour or a Pampered Chef party or something.
