My son is on an antibiotic and has had HORRIBLE poo issues......for 5 days. I am giving probiotics and pushing liquids but I am to the point of wanting to stop the antibiotic it's so bad.

We go to the doctor today and I was wondering if there was anythign else I could do or ask her for today?

What can I do next?

bananas, rices, applesauce, and toast might help. If it is severe enough maybe they can try treating with a different antibiotic. My kids both have a hard time with antibiotics but it usually starts towards the end of the treatment not the entire time.

Try the BRAT diet listed below...and lots of yogurt. Avoid juices as they're heavy in sugar. The body is ridding itself of an infection and this is the result. Other than that, there's really nothing more you can do. Hope he's better soon!

I agree with bananas, rice, toast/bread. Make sure he is taking it while eating. Maybe some mashed potatoes. Oatmeal. Etc.

yogurt doesnt have enough probiotics to make a good difference. be sure to use the powdered form for kids instead if you haven't been already. i used culturelle for kids (got it from target) and it worked really well for our son. if you have already tried the powdered probiotics ask the dr for a different antibiotic.

Definitely get a different type of antibiotic. The probiotics are good, but not from yogurt. Diary actually can cause intestinal issues and there aren't enough of the right kinds of bacteria in it.

What is he taking an antibiotic for? Depending on the issue and severity, he may not even really need it. For example, a pediatrician I work with learned that it takes 2 days for an antibiotic to take effect on an ear infection. And, get this, it takes about 2 days for an ear infection to clear up on it's own. So ask your doc lots of questions and see if you can't get answers that make better sense for your family.

Good luck...D.

i don't know what specifically to ask, but my doc gave my daughter Rezyst (probiotic)-- is that the one you are giving him?

Yogurt is also good- make sure it has the active cultures.

Whatever you do, don't give fruit juices. We went through this for 2 months with our 2nd. Her tummy got out of whack due to antibiotics and in an effort to keep her hydrated we gave her water, fruit juice, and still breast fed. Dr. couldn't figure out why she was having issues told me she may be lactose and to quit nursing. I refused. After 2 months, 2 stool samples, an upper GI that turned into a full one(7hours without her eating) and a 3 hour trip out of town to a GI specialist we finally figured it out. For the 2 weeks prior to the specialists office I kept an input/output record on her and the first thing she said was stop the juice. If she's not better in 3 days call back. I called back but it was only to tell her thank you for ending our suffering!
