Anal Fissure - We Were Referred to a Peadriatric Surgeon (!)

my 18 month old has been constipated, we've been giving her mirilax for awhile. a few weeks ago she developed a fissure on her bottom, and also what looks like a skin tag on it. SO PAINFUL for her. Our peditrition said to watch it for a few weeks, but even though it has been only a week i called her for advice because it is so sore, my poor baby cries everytime we wipe her. She referred us to a pediatric surgeon and she got us an appt for her TODAY! I am freaking out thinking OMG she might need SURGERY??!!!

plus, I googled it and found similar looking skin tag problems relating to chrons disease, which is uncommon in children but sounds like it is really really horrible if they do have it. like life-changing bad. !!

So I'm a frantic mess and I just want to cry, I'm at work and I have an hour to go until I can leave and take her to this appointment! But I am scared what I am going to find out!

Anyones baby ever had an anal fissure with a skin tag?

What can I do next?

I am truly sorry you are going through this...

Please!! PLEASE!! PLEASE!! Stay off google...you will make yourself sick and convince yourself that your child has some awful disease...

Next - stop panicking!! you panic? your kid panics...

While I don't have experience with the skin tags...I do have experience with the anal fissures and they do hurt!! Poor kid!!! Epson salt bath and oatmeal bathes help a lot in reducing the inflammation...

I realize she's not potty trained but keeping her stools loose is going to be IMPORTANT in the healing process! If she is straining and constipated at 18 months...that's sad!!! She might have food allergies - not Chrones - but gluten allergies that can bind up and persons insides and make them constipated...keep a food diary and a poop diary so that you KNOW what's going on.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I know it sounds scary, but it really is not as bad as you may think. I have not dealt with a fissure in a baby but I did have one myself and was reffered to a surgeon right away. he gave me a cream to put on it to relieve some of the pain and loosen that muscle that caused the fissure in the first place. worst case seniro your child will need surgery to permanetally loosen that muscle. I did end up needing to have surgery but it is a pretty easy surgery as far as surgery goes I know this dosent answer all your questions but I hope it can give you a little relief in at least kind of knowing what to expect Good luck T.

My little one had a skin tag on her face that was quite prominant--our doc, and the surgeon she referred us to, suggested waiting til she was 1 to have it removed; she was 14 months when they removed it. She was in and out in about 10 minutes, and they didn't even have to use an IV; the mask was enough for my baby. Yeah, it was scary, but I'm thankful she didn't have to have it done later in life, when she was aware of it and hated how it made her look. Anyway--likely the appointment is (was?) just to have a referral, not necessarily indicating that she needs surgery. If she does, remember that a pediatric surgeon is a good bet, and for the majority of the population, surgery is quite safe.

I would be freaking out too but try and tell yourself it won't help and you need to think clearly. You have time; don't rush into anything until your comfortable. Seek a 2nd or 3rd opinion and choose the specialist/surgeon you feel has the most experience.

Google only remedies to easy her pain and discomfort and like Cheryl said don't look at horror stories or pictures online. Her situation is not other people's and only the worst photos make it online.

I would be open to the possibility of surgery as this maybe the best solution to prevent future pain and maybe issues in years to come. Fix this now while she is just a baby and will not remember the surgery and will heal with less scaring.
I have friends who are nurses and they say its very rare for little kids under 2.5yrs-3yrs to remember being in hospital even the smell of the place will not trigger any recollection.

I'm sorry you all have to go through this. Look after yourself and think of the long term.

My little one had this same thing and we did have it surgically removed. I was nervous but it all went very smoothly. She is fine now with it and she was much better shortly after the surgery. In fact just the other day I was cleaning out a cupboard and found the bottle of Mirilax and thought back to that time. It seemed so long ago.
