I will be calling the dentist in the morning, but was just wondering does anyone know how long it takes for antibiotics to take down an abcessed tooth? My son has been taking amoxicillin since Tuesday evening 2 times a day, so its been 2 days. I think the swelling is actually getting worse. Just doesn't seem right to me.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The dentist said its day 3 with antibiotics and no improvement, so they are pulling it Monday morning. Thank you for all the info!

The usual "run" is 7-10 days. 2 days is pretty soon.

Ask whether you should use ice to reduce the swelling or use heat to get the blood moving through there and promote drainage.

When I've had abscesses they always prescribe Amoxicillian and it seems like it takes longer that other antibiotics.

I will say that every abscess that I have ever had ended up having to be drilled to allow the puss to escape and get well quicker. From what I can understand it helps the antibiotic to get inside the abscess much quicker. If the doc wants to do that let him. It is instant relief.

If it is a really bad, it really can take 5 or more days, remember the mouth is filthy anyway..

Usually within a week or so will the infection be gone, but the pain/swelling may take a few days.

Amoxicillian doesn't work very well for me or my children and nephews. We prefer Cippro and Doxycycline, they are stronger.

it can take upto the full course of treatment to see a difference.Sometimes a second round is needed but depends if the dentist says the decay is too bad and the tooth needs to be abstracted antibiotics didn't take and won't with a rotten tooth
