My daughter (8) has been asking for an American Girl doll for YEARS. This year she has it on her "big gift wish list" for Christmas. We are going to get her one, but I have my money budgeted out and the biggest dollar amount isn't until early December...but I assume it takes 4-6 weeks for a doll to arrive? Does anyone know?
ADDED - did you also buy extra clothes or accessories?
ETA again: We can afford it, we are just in debt paydown mode and I have a chunks of money set aside for Christmas this year. Those outfits will come as gifts for Christmas and birthdays, to which I also set aside certain amounts of money for :).

I called and they said 6-9 days, but if I want for December give it 2 weeks to be sure! So I'll order it at the end of this month on a cc nd just pay it off on the 9th instead of waiting for the 9th, because that is cutting it close :).
I don't remember exactly, but I think it only took 7-10 days for the doll to arrive. We bought one and I got some sale items to go with it. I htink getting some clothes and the historical books makes it a little more fun, but you could buy standard clothes anywhere.
Do you know there is a store in Mclean VA right outside the beltway. You could just go there to buy the doll. (TYSONS CORNER CENTER)
I didn't read all your responses but did you know that there is an American Girl Doll store at the Tysons Corner mall? I see you are from DC. Go to the store and spend your chunk of $ in December and not have to pay for shipping and handling. Just be prepared for AG overload and excess.
Also, my girls have been happy with outfits from target or other places that sell doll clothes that fit AG doll.
I suggest you call the company directly and ask them about the specific doll your daughter wants. That way they can tell you the last day to order the doll to arrive in time for Christmas and they can let you know about any additional shipping charges that might be added if you order past those dates.
We ordered our daughter's, and it arrived within about a week. They ship them very quickly. We ordered one of the "just like me" dolls, or whatever they're called. The ones where you can pick which combination of hair and eyes you'd like.
Ditto to what the other moms said on when it will arrive. Thir customer service people are so nice too; you will love dealing with them.
I did buy a pair of PJs for that first doll so they could do their "night time routine" together (ok maybe a bit much but I thought it was so CUTE to watch my daughter getting her doll ready for bed!)
AND you can buy patterns from Simplicity and make your own doll clothes, which I did a couple times because the AG clothes get a little pricey, and because it just made my daughter happy. BTW they fit the doll well and I did not find them overly difficult...just time-consuming.

We got ours in just a few weeks last year. We ordered Molly, not one of the dolls that your customize to look like your child.
We are getting ready to use the doll hospital. I think it said, must receive the doll by the end of nov to be ready for christmas. I assume it would be the same for ordering one. There may be a number that you can call.
You said that you had to budget out the money to buy the American Girl doll. Just want to point out that the clothes and accessories are quite expensive too!! She isn't going to be happy with just one outfit, so make sure that you are thinking about budgeting for the next couple of years to buy the DOLL $50 outfits.

We ordered ours a week before Christmas and it arrived with time to spare. We used outfits frOm target.
It has been a while since I ordered one but it took less than two weeks. They keep a pretty good stock of all their dolls so it isn't any different than anything else you order. Granted if you pick a popular doll it may be out of stock for a bit but other than that plan like anything else you have to order.
We have three AG dolls and they were all shipped very quickly, and all were ordered after the first of December :)
My daughter drove into chicago and picked the doll out and brought her home the same day. Not sure it would take any extra time unless your picking our specific hair/eyes etc that is not one of the regular dolls. If your picking one out of the catalog it shouldn't take any longer than any other toy.
it took about a week for us to get the one we ordered, I think they are sent from MN.
