Believe it or not- my daughter cannot have chocolate either! In her case, she gets stomach cramps and vomits violently!! My mother also didn't believe me and gave her some chocolate at a restaurant one evening when we were all out to dinner and my daughter became soooo ill!! She didn't vomit, but she might as well have!!

I found out that it's something in the cocoa that causes the reaction. My daughter can eat white chocolate, no problem. And I also found out that chocolate or cocoa allergy is pretty common among children- but that most of them don't outgrow it. It's a lifelong issue.

If you want to know for sure, have your children tested by an allergist. And ask them to do a scratch test for cocoa powder, cocoa butter and chocolate liquor. I've been meaning to do that with my daughter, but for now we've just been avoiding chocolate altogether.

And make sure you tell your childcare provider, teachers, friends, neighbors etc. Because you never know when a situtation might arise where your children are offered some cookies, cake or candy with chocolate in it!!

I've been to many doctors because of my allergies... I'm not sure where your doctor got his information but my allergists (I've had about 5 since I was a kid) have all said that with allergies you can outgrow them or rather your body can stop reacting to something anytime in your life. That being said, you can also develop a new allergy any time in your life. The thing is that once you have an allergy, you can't assume that you will "grow" out of it. At some time in your life it may go away or you may have it for the rest of your life. Your doctor may have been trying to let you know that if it hasn't gone away by 5 years of age, it is likely something your son will need to watch for the rest of his life. This does not mean he will always react to it. Just that the possibility will always be there so he will always have to be careful with that item and be aware that as a child he was allergic to it. One thing to remember, though, is that if your son has a severe reaction to something, you should NOT test to see if it has gone away by exposing him to it on purpose. Also, if you really think it is a true allergy and not some other type of reaction, ask for a referral to an allergist. An allergist specializes in allergies and can give you better insight as well as test your son for allergies. It may not be the chocolate or the caffeine but maybe a common ingredient in the way the foods are processed.

Good luck.

My sister and I were both allergic to chocolate when we were little. We would become sick and throw up. We both ended up outgrowing it by our teen years (when we were rebellious and tried it without our mother's knowledge). No problems now :)

my kids arent allergic to chocolate but my sister-in-law is and she is 23 now. My son is allergic to eggs. Try telling your family members he isnt allowed to have cookies and see them look at you. Just keep treats that you know they are allowed on hand when you go to your families house. We did find cookies that didnt have eggs in them for my son liek Oreos but homemade cookies are a no-no. Its going to be hard to for them to remember and heck they may think its all in your mind but ONLY YOU know whats best for your kids. IF the ped has diagonised them with this then tell them look if you dont beelive me talk to thier doctors. Usually that will stop them quick in thier tracks. I know becuase I have had to use that with a bunch of things snice my kids where born.

I don't think it's strange at all. I've never actually heard of someone being allergic to chocolate but now I have! I don't think it's weird though. I rarely give my kids chocolate or caffeine to begin with, it's a special treat.

I know what you mean. My son, who is 4, is allergic to peanuts. He'll probably have this for the rest of his life. And people don't understand that it's a life threatening allergy. I hope your children grow out of it. I didn't start feeding my son any chocolate type things until he was 3.
