Am I Sick or Just Pregnant?

Lately I have been feeling under the weather very frequently (lack of appetite, nausea, chills, body aches and headaches) and have seen a lot on the news about the flu going around. I got a flu shot this year but I do tend to get sick very easily and I'm confused if my illness is just symptoms of my pregnancy or if I genuinely have the flu bug. I don't have a doctors appointment with my OB for another three weeks and I'm wondering if I should schedule an appointment sooner but I don't want to get there just to find out that its just pregnancy related illness. Any suggestions on when is the appropriate time to speak to a doctor about this?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice! I have started feeling better so I'm pretty sure the chills and body aches were the flu. I was really sick in the beginning of my pregnancy so I'm relieved that some of those nasty sypmtoms are going away. Thank you for your reassurance that some of the things I'm experiencing are normal.

HI C.,
I got all of those symtoms when I Was pregnant but I Had twins, and THE best thing to do is call your doctor and tell him/her, see what they think, it is soooooo not worth being stressed out over, stress is as dangerous for your prenancy as anything. so call DOC and put your mind at ease, if it is bothering you there is a reason.
And weather it be the flu or the pregnacy keep hydrated and eat you MUST eat and drink, even if it is hard.
DON'T be embarrassed to call part of being pregnant is paranoia Doctors are used to it, and this as a result of hormones going wild in your system. but as the mother of 7 I would call just to relieve my worry, because it may or may not be a normal part of your pregnacy.

First off CONGRATS! The flu shot didn't carry the right virus this year so you can get the flu still, won't suffer as badly but you aren't fully protected. Your immune system can lower with being pregnant too. I had the flu when pregnant with my daughter and was miserable, stay super hydrated, find out from your OBGYN what you can take to relieve your symptoms, tylenol, benadryl I think are choices. Get lot's of rest. You shouldn't have chills being pregnant or headaches at all. Call your OBGYN, they can answer questions over the phone and can give you a swab in your nose to find out if it is indeed the flu, just do not get dehydrated!

Since you're as far along as you are, I would think you're probably sick. Your OB will probably tell you to see your regular doctor. Since you're in your middle trimester, you should be feeling great (for pregnancy). Lately I've hardly even felt pregnant except for a kick every now and then. With my first two pregnancies I was sick all the time. Thankfully, I haven't this time around. I hope you get to feeling better soon! Congratulations on that little guy!

It sounds like the lack of appetite and the nausea are signs of the pregnancy, but it could also be flu related. If you are really concerned just call your ob and talk to them, it doesn't take another appointment and tell them what you are experiencing and see what they say. When you are doing the pregnancy thing for the first time it is a little scary not knowing, but the doctors understand that and will put up with some odd questions (and if they don't switch to a new one) to put your mind at ease. Each person's pregnancy is different, I tend to get headaches if I don't get enough water but other women don't get them at all. I would get some rest, check in with the doc and then go from there. Congrats and good luck.

Other than chills all of those symptoms could be pregnancy related. I got headaches when I was pregnant, my doctor didn't seem to be bothered by it-he said I could take tylenol. I have never heard of fever and chills being pregnancy related. If you just have the flu there isn't much your doctor can do--but you don't want to get dehydrated or too high of a fever. It never hurts to call the doctor if you are unsure and worried about your health or the health of your baby. Doctors appreciate patients who ask questions because if they don't know something is wrong-they can't fix anything.
