Am I Getting Too Much Sleep?

I have been so ridiculously tired lately. I know it is b/c I have started back to work, but it just seems I have lost all motivation. I haven't even got up to exercise in the past week b/c I am so tired, which then makes me feel sluggish during the day (b/c I ddin't exercise).

Last night I fell asleep at 8:30! (I know, go ahead and tease me.... haha). So I got 9 hours of sleep last night. I think that is more then plenty, but yet I feel like I only have had 4 or 5 hours of sleep.

So, am I sleeping too much now? Do I need to force myself to stay away? I even have bags under my eyes this morning.

Thanks

Hi Sam I Am,

Do you have any other symptoms, like a sore throat? Extreme fatigue can signal anything from depression to infectious mononucleosis, or even a disruption of the circadian rhythm or sleep apnea. If this persists another few days, a trip to the doctor could help sort things out.

Nope you obviously needed it. If it persists there could be something more to it. However, there are times when you are simply tired and your body needs that extra rest.

I love sleep, sleeping's my favorite. I love going to bed around 9pm and sleeping until 7am :)

Maybe you're getting sick... your body's telling you it needs that rest. Try singing or jogging in place for a few seconds to wake yourself up! But then take it easy, and listen to your body :)

I think the change of seasons can put your entire body into a funk.

Aim for 8 hours and work from that, maybe.

Change of seasons makes me drag in the AM, especially if it's dreary. Are you sensitive to sunlight?

You could also be fighting a low-level cold. My body just wants to rest when I have a cold, even a minor one.

If you've also recently changed your routine, that can take a while to adjust, too.

I feel like that when I get too much sleep. But, I also feel like that when I don't get enough (like today - 5 hours last night). Maybe try to cut back an hour or so and see how you feel? Maybe your getting sick? Hope you feel better soon

If it continues, one thing you may want to rule out is sleep apnea - a lot of doctors tend to overlook this so if you go for a checkup, maybe you can ask to get tested - it requires a sleep study. My husband has sleep apnea - he was always so tired even after sleeping ten hours or more but always felt he wasn't getting enough sleep. We did some research and asked to have a sleep study done, and sure enough, he had sleep apnea. Now he feels so much more rested, using a sleep apnea machine. He also had a friend who always felt tired and went to so many doctors without any solution - my husband suggested he get tested for sleep apnea, and he did have it and now sleeps much better.

If I were you, I'd think about getting a checkup. Or at least I'd sit down and think (without falling asleep in the chair) about what I've eaten in the last week, what I've done differently, what I haven't done.

You have good energy when you're not ill or overtired, and when you have enough calories inside you (most of us have no trouble with that) to run on.

That being said, it certainly takes my body a while to adjust to a new schedule - sometimes as long as a week or two. If you fell asleep on your own very early, your body must have needed the rest! But try to keep more or less to the schedule you want to set, and eventually it will seem right.

I think you've built up a sleep deficit and you need a few good nights of sleep to make up for it.
After a few days, try to work in some exercise again and aim for your usual amount of sleep (I feel good with 8 hours, drag with 7, and can barely function with 6 or less - but the amount varies from person to person).
Give yourself some time to adjust to your new schedule.
While you are adjusting, it's common to feel kind of jet lagged.
If you're still feeling tired, then try this.
Go to bed early as you can, but wake up early and get your exercise in first thing in the morning.
It will wake you up, and by the time the day is over it will help you sleep better.
