Am I Doing the Right Thing or Not????

Ok I think I need some outside advice! I started going to school online back in October 2010, everything was going really great until my past two classes. I had straight A's but now I can barely keep my grades above F's!! This is totally unacceptable in my eyes! I have reached out to my instructors about having trouble. They both say they understand and have been trying give me tips to help with my assignments but I don't know what my deal is I just can focus or something. So my question is I talked about doing this online schooling and basically talked my family into supporting me in doing it but I'm having so much trouble that I don't know if I should drop out of the online classes (which I will have to pay back my loans), or struggle with my assignments, grades, and meeting my participation. I have already looked into going to a different school which I can get help paying for from the county I live in. I am just really afraid of what my family will say because now I have to worry about paying another bill?

What can I do next?

I think you need to buck up and complete what you began. Throwing in the towel will have long lasting affects on you emotionally (as a quitter "wow, I should have stuck it out") and physically since you will pay back a loan with regrets. Sounds like you lost what once drove you? Try to get that back. Quitters never prosper.

I think you should finish what you've started. What will switching do if you struggle with the new classes?

What do you think is going on? Do you need more uninterrupted time? O.-on-O. help? Clearer instruction? Try to identify why suddenly, you are struggling now.

Good luck!

Remember--good things rarely come easy! Keep your eye on the prize.

I work from home and I know how hard it can be to be focused. I would take the grades as a reality check. If you think a more traditional program is better for you, change schools. You are not the first nor will you be the last to change programs/schools for a better fit.

It could be a temporary glitch (I had a few bad classes) or it could be a trend. Finish the semester since it's almost over and have a heart to heart with your advisor. Then go from there. I would present it to your family that you realized it's not for you, this is another option, you aren't giving up on school, just the TYPE of school you attend.

Keep it up. You are struggling so what. Lots of people struggle in school, if it were easy every one would be making tons of money as CEO's, or Lawyers. Here's the deal take an assignment and ask your family for help. You got them to support you take advantage of that. I asked mine for help and finished school just before I gave birth with my first child. I struggled with classes and asked my family for help and using a new set of eyes to see things differently may help out a lot. You can do this, you are a smart woman.

online school is not for everyone. you should probably attend a bricks-and-mortar campus (i know i would have to.)
but having started this semester, you should finish it up.

I think you should stick these classes out, don't quit, and keep talking to your instructors. Stay in communication with them.

I think that since you went from A's to F's - it shows that you have the ability to study and do well...something changed....do you know what it is? Are you not sleeping, eating well?

Analyze where and when you study and protect your time and space...make sure the environment is conducive to your needs, that it's quiet, unplug the phones, no radios, do not disturb signs, whatever it takes, then have a strong cup of coffee before starting, etc.

Get you head back in the game L.. You can pull your F's up to C's and pass with the help of your teachers. Let them know how much it means to you to finish this and that you've learned a valuable lesson..that you will probably return to a 'bricks and mortar' school in the near future.

First of all, this is your decision, NOT your family's. You are the one going through school and working at it, not them, so they don't even get a say, unless they are paying your bills.

Second... isn't the semester about over? I'm confused, because my husband goes to school and his semester is literally over next week, it's too late to drop anything anyway. Is this not the case for you?

Third, online classes are for certain people. My husband and I have never been able to do online classes. They are NOT for everybody. It takes a certain amount of self discipline that some people just don't have. It's not wrong or right, but just be honest with yourself about what you can and cannot do. If online classes is not your thing, don't do it. It seems easier in theory, but I actually find it harder.

Last, take a breath. School is so hard, for anybody. Give yourself a break. Relax. It's not really about getting straight A's, it's about perservering and getting through it. You CAN do this.

I'm a great student, but with online classes it was a struggle for me. I need the daily motivation on being in a classroom, interacting with students and teachers. You may be the same way.

Only you can decide. In my case I find it easier to study and learn on my own than sitting in a class. I get very little out of lectures and have zero patience for class projects. Online classes are so much easier by comparison for me. BUT, I should add that I'm not a good student period and I finally decided I needed to lay it aside and forget about it entirely. Yeah, I had to pay back some things I didn't use. That sucks. I also keep getting the urges to try again and try so hard to remind myself that it's NOT worth it to me. There are other ways to learn.

If you are taking classes to get a degree and go into a new profession, one, ask yourself how committed you are. Two, how many more classes you have and what the problem is... Are they going to get worse and you have a long road ahead or are you almost there? Be honest. I changed majors after being honest with myself, because I wasn't engaged enough to want to spend x yrs and beyond. But if this is your first roadblock and you just have to pass these 2 courses and the rest are better/you are committed... Get a tutor. Ask the teachers for references.
