Am I Asking Too Much??? Honestly?!?!

I want to hire someone to come over this summer and stay with my kids who are 3 and 6, 5 days a week while I work. I want them to have more one-on-one than what a daycare gives them and someone to take the kids to soccer camp and swimming lessons or other stuff like that. I have not found anybody that seems like they are in my price range. Should it cost that much more than daycare?? I am at a loss as to what I can do for my kids, I do not want them couped up at a daycare all day getting absolutely no attention. I hate it that my son has to attend full time daycare as it is. I guess I am just wondering what the going weekly rate would be for someone to come over 8-9 hours a day to hang out and do typical nanny duties for the summer. I know that you get what you pay for as far as care goes, but really am I asking too much???

What can I do next?

The range for nannies can be great - from $9/hr for some to $15/hr for others. I've paid from 9-12 and got different things from each (not necessarily in line with what I was paying them). I used gonannies.com to find my nannies and craigslist to find one for a "vacation" for my nanny (it was a college girl who charged only $9/hr, but was great!).

I guess from that you can take the weekly rate would be from $400 to $675.

Good luck in your searh!

If you don't mind me asking, what gender are your kids and where do you live?

I am a stay-at-home mom of a 6 year od boy (will be 7 in May) who will need playmates and/or something to do this Summer. He will be enrolled in several camps (soccer is of MAJOR interest), but being that we are fairly new to the area, we do not have many playmates and he really will need the socialization over the Summer. Additionally, I would like to earn a little cash on the side, so when I read your post, a little bell went off.

Maybe we can help each other out(?). Let me know if you would be interested in talking. We have a nice, large home with pool and plenty of toys/video games, etc, but I would be willing to come to you, as well. Maybe we could alternate venues so he kids aren't playing with the same toys everyday...I'm getting ahead of myself, I know, but just throwing things out there...Let me know!

I don't know what you are looking to pay someone, but basically you want a full time nanny- you want someone to be YOU all day. What would you pay yourself?

I know that sounds bad, I really don't know how else to say that tho- Since you work full time you are looking for a person to "be you" full time- 40+ hours a week. That is a lot to ask so I am guessing you will have to pay a lot.

We have a "live in" nanny and we pay her $1300/mo., provide a car and two tanks of gas, food, living expenses, etc. Typically, we've found that "live out" nannies require more pay...$1600/mo.+.

Good Luck!

My college-age daughter did a similar job for one child last summer. She took him to movies, to the pool, to camp, to birthday parties/playdates, picked him up from school, played with him at home -- you get the idea. She was paid $10/hour, plus reimbursed for any meals and activity costs that the Mom had arranged. My daughter used her own transportation and gas.

My daughter had friends with similar jobs and comparable pay. Hopefully, this helps you determine what you're willing to pay.
