Alternative Treatments for Asthma/Allergies

On the way to daycare yesterday my 13 month old son had an asthma flair up- SCARY! I rushed him to the ER, they gave him steroids, breathing treatments, etc. He is doing better, but I hate the fact that he has to be on all of these meds. My doctor has reccomended some alternative/homeopathic solutions, but I really want to take him to a specialist. He is too little to be on all these drugs all the time.

Anyone out there who has a place they would reccomend? I live in Rochester Hills, but will drive to get him the right treatment.

Also- have had him tested for all allergies and it came back 100% negative. My pediatrician said that under 2 these tests can come back false negative.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I live in the St. Louis area so have no recommendations for you as far as doctors. If you want to come to St. Louis, I have a great one. My comment is I would definitely take him to a pediatric allergist to be evaluated. You will need to figure out what is causing the flares which will help you with the treatment. Good luck in your search.

Hi E.---There is nothing scarier than when it is difficult to breathe. I believe that it is possible to balance the immune system, which is what needs to be done with allergies and asthma. Unfortunately, all the meds that traditional medicine recommends only deal with the symptoms of allergies. We must go straight to the source of the problem...the immune system.

If you would like more info on how our diet, specifically lots of fruits and veggies, can balance the immune system, please contact me. I have numerous studies to show how they do just that. I am taking a series of wellness classes, taught by a naturopath who has her PhD in nutrition so I have lots of info to share. I look forward to helping.

Good luck, D.

Can you get a referral to a pediatric allergist/pulmonologist at Mayo based upon your location? I'm surprised he recommended alternative/homeopathic solutions for something as serious as asthma.

As much as it stinks to have your child tied to medications, I will say that the products on the market have the monitoring of the FDA behind them. If there is a new precaution, recall, etc. you will know about it. You will not with a homeopathic product/treatment. It doesn't mean there aren't any risks - just that there's careful monitoring and a track record of clinical information that led to the product being approved.

That being said - I have a friend who's been a doctor ~8-10 years and had dealt with asthma all his life. During one particularly bad attack, he was tested for food allergies and found his asthma stemmed from a gluten allergy he had never known about. I'd see as many specialists as possible to make sure you completely understand the root of his issues and how to most safely/effectively treat him.

For natural Asthma relief Google Halotherapy (dry salt therapy). It's amazing, and very new in the USA. Your doctor won't have a clue since he is more or less uneducated about natural healing, but do the research yourself.

I don't know about alergies other than I know as Kids grow just like adults can end up having an allergy to something or reaction. Like non of my kids had reactions to stuff but as they get older they suffer from seasonal allergies and if they had it when they where under two than they don't know there older. Asthma is kinda the same I have a son who has asthma he sounds like the commercial he hasn't had any symptooms since he was 4. Usually it acts up when he gets a cold or sick. The dr. had him do preventation up till about 5 i decided he didn't need it any more. My daughter as broncital asthma and shes the same as him he wants them to take like singular and they did but around two years ago i stopped it because no matter if i used it or not they still had symptoms. maybe not as severe but they still had it. if he doesn't have allergies a panic attach or nerves can cause an asthma attach too. He only needs to take the treatments till he feels better and the symptoms are gon about 5 to 7 days. I have 4 kids and two have nebulizer. the other two never had symptoms i think alot of pediatricians try to sugar coat things too. keep him on the treatments till he can breath well than pull him off its up to you if you keep him on preventative sstuff. My son also suffered from laringomalacia so he had a swallon esphagus till he was 5 too. Good luck
