I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old children. They are both very healthy, but get colds very often. Does anybody know of a alternative medicine (homeopathy, syrup, tea, juice etc....) that I can give to my children to boost their inmunity.??

What can I do next?

Your 1 yr old may still be a little young for much. Remeber starting healthy eating habits is key, a rainbow of fruits and vegetables is best. Organic as much as possible lessens their exposure to pesticides and chemicals, and is more nurtrient dense. If your children must drink milk, it needs to be organic (todays milk is full of antibiotics & hormones that makes anyone immune to them when they really need them- www.notmilk.com), it is also very mucous producing. Best to make a trip to Whole Foods or Sun Harvest, read labels and avoid things: high fructose corn syrup, D&C food colors, artificial anything, dl-tocopherol (you want the d-tocophrol) & gelatin. My favs from there are B&T arnica (great for bruises), Primadopohilis for Children (probiotic-boosts immunity), Herbal Expec for children Rescue Remedy (great for those really stressful moments, safe for children & pets), Avalon Baby Products.
Also, using enviornmentally friendly cleaning products will help boost their immune system, by not overtaxing their systems (I like Melaleuca or 7th Gen). Avoid aerosols, phosphates, bleach & perfumes. Hope this helps. C

What you are experiencing is entirely normal and in fact important for them to develop natural immunity. (My guess is that they are coming into contact with other kids - daycare/momsdayout/playcentres/friends!) By the time they are a little older they will be able to go for months and months without getting anything - but that first couple of years is pretty constant. You might also want to check that it isnt colds and maybe mild allergies which turned out to be the case with both mine (lots of clear snot!). Hang in there - and lots of healthy, unprocessed foods!

I would not recommend supplements to children at this age without the advice of a doctor. A healthy diet and regular handwashing is the best preventative. Make sure they get plenty of fluids and exercise, too.

How much yogurt do they eat? Find one that is made with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. The natural acidolphilous (spelling?) cultures will boost their immunity; plus its a source of calcium, iron and good fat. Dilute with milk and make a smoothy.

You can buy Probiotic powder at People's pharmacy or the health food store. Mix it in with a smoothy.

First off, kids get sick! Second, give them lots of fruits and veggies. Cranberry juice is good, they need lots of fiber, protein and literally all vitamins. Ask your doctor for advice! You could also attend or apply for WIC if it's available, they always have nutritious recipes or ideas for kiddos. Good luck!

Hello,
Wow! I have two boys too. Come March they will be 2 and 4 years old:)
Anyways, there is a wonderful website called Perelandra, a woman named michelle started a cooperative garden decades ago with nature(you can read all about it if you are interested), she has essences/drops made from vegetables and flowers, also special formulas for immune, nervous system, digestion etc. I recommend and have used the immune drops and also tomato is good for the whole immune system. My boys started taking drops from the day they were born and they do not flinch with the taste. If yours refuse to take them you can put them on the back of the neck and other parts of the body.
I hope this helps

Hi S.,
You are so lucky to have little ones. One thing I would suggest is to be sure you have rid your home of chemicals and toxins Little ones who breath these chemicals seems to have a low tollerance and immunity systems seem to be lower than normal. If you want to know how you can do this without spending any money PM me and I will give you the sites to look at.

Blessings

S.,

Funny, I just posted a question this morning about supplements to boost immunity. Someone told me about Oil of Oregano, and I wanted more information on it.

I've been taking Olive Leaf Extract for a couple of years, and haven't been sick, since. They do make it for kids. Both pills, and something called Xtreme Tasteez. They're basically a really sour, sugar free pixie stick (in a packet). My girls don't LOVE them or take them every day (thus, my question about the Oil of Oregano), but if I mix it in lemonade or Kool-Aid, they'll usually drink it.

Do a google search on the OLE - it's pretty cool. It's an anti -bacterial, -viral, & -fungal. I know it falls under the category of "TMI," but early this year on a camping trip (not the most sterile circumstances), I caught barf in my hands (to avoid the tent floor), wiped them off, and went back to bed (I was NOT tromping across the camp in the cold & pitch black to wash my hands) - AND I NEVER GOT SICK.

The dosage calls for a lot more, but I only take one at bedtime, then if I start to feel a little off or the kids are sick, I take an extra in the morning. I swear by this stuff!

If you go to ameriden.com (highest quality, I hear), use coupon code "sept0809" You'll get 20% off OLE and 50% off the XtremeTasteez.

I've been giving my son a children's multivitamin for as long as I can remember and I've been told the more they are around other children the faster they will become immune to colds etc. I've heard of a children's vitamin that is suppose to be all natural etc that I've seen at health shows although I can't think of the name of it. I think it was $30 or $60 a month I don't remember sorry. I just give my son the children's vitamins from the store and he eats well, proteins, vegetables, fruits, smoothies etc.

umcka can be found at kroger and vitamin world. we found it when we lived in germany as it was prescribed there for our kids. I agree to use caution with any supplememts and small kids. however, i can tell you your pediatrician will say they do not work. My husband loves umcka. I am currently using zicam with my kids. nothing seems to prevent sickness and this seems to lesson the severity of it. hope this was helpful. oh and a good diet should help as well, fruit veg and water.

My son was sick constantly when he entered day care. It seemed like he was given an antibiotic once a month from six months until about a year and a half. He's now three. I started giving him Michael's Pediavites from the health food store and I saw a drastic reduction in getting sick. He's only required antibiotics once or twice a year since I started. If I missed a dose, he'd start getting symptoms of a cold. He's allergic in nature. I faithfully give them and if he gets sick, it's very minor and passes within a day or so and doesn't usually require a trip to the doctor. His fever when he does get sick never has gotten as high as when it did before I started them. Just felt a little warm and hasn't prompted me to pull out the thermometer and see how high it was.

I've since added probiotics to his regimen. Animal Parade has a probiotic for inner ear to help give healthy bacteria to the ear and reduces ear infections. I also have been giving him Buddy Bear probiotics which have different strains.

We did get the stomach bug that was going around just before Christmas. He was only vomiting for one day and never got diarrhea. Other kids and adults I knew that got it, were in bed sick for days and lingering for weeks. One was even hospitalized.

Take a trip to your health food store and there's a children's vitamin section. I get all my supplements from the health food store. They are made from whole foods and are better absorbed by the body as opposed to synthetic vitamins from chemicals and not as easily absorbed.

I was astounded in the change in his health. My pocketbook was quite happy, too. It seemed like the only antibiotics that worked were over $100 for a course, not to mention the cost of doctor's visits.

I began using a combo and so far it has been working like a charm, though the season isn't over. SuperKids vitamins (berry) mixed with BerryWell immunity booster. I found them through beeyoutiful.com. You can also add probiotics and digestive enzymes to their diet which help. But, this year I tried the combo above. It has also helped tremendously with my son's bowel movements. He used to take prune juice like medicine; but since on this combo, he hasn't had to. They don't care for it very much, but take it fine. I've tried giving them separately, but I think the mix of two gives it a better flavor all around. **If your 1 year old is eating well, he won't need the vitamins on a regular basis until after age 2. So, you could just give the BerryWell.

Hey S.,
I have an eight-year-old and I give her a standard mutivitamin every day. Whenever she seems to be getting sick and during any illness I give her liquid echinacea extract with a vitamin c and a zinc lozenge as well. I just started doing it this winter and it seems to have really helped minimize her illnesses.
I put the liquid vitamins in orange juice and she has no problem taking it. (She's very finicky about taking medicines that "taste awful" but the oj disguises the flavor)
Here's a link to the vitamin C http://tinyurl.com/cx7ubs
Here's a link to the echinacea http://tinyurl.com/cm5tqq
Here is a link to L'il Critters Gummy Immune C Plus Zinc & Echinacea. If your kiddos like gummy bears they'll probably take these with no problem...

Hi S.,

If you want the best, and safest children's products - guaranteed, you may want to consider the company I represent. We are the #1 natural nutriton company in the U.S. We have been uncompromising in our values and standards for over 50 years. We start with nauture and our scientists search the world over to source the finest natural ingredients. Then we conduct over 350 tests on every single new ingredient for heavy metals, pesticides, or any of the hundreds of other harmful contaminants. And we continue to conduct over 80,000 quality tests annually to guarantee the purity and safety of each and every product. We have invested more than $250 milllion in research, development, and clinical testing. We guarantee utmost effectiveness. Our products are free of artificial preservatives, sweeteners, colors, and flavors, as well as parabens and banned substances. Even our packaging is safe and free of toxins bisphenol-A, phthalates, and toxic inks. That's why we are absolutely sure of this: Our products are 100% safe to use. Guaranteed.

Why is all this important? Look at the list of children's vitamin products contaminated with lead:
http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/pbvitami.html

As for herbal remedies, unlike prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, herbal remedies are not rigorously regulated by the FDA. They face no extensive tests before they are marketed, and they do not have to adhere to a standard of quality. That means when you buy a bottle of an herabl supplement, you might not know what you're getting: the amount of herb can vary from pill to pill. Depending on where the herb originated, there might also be other plants, even drugs like steroids, mixed in the capsules. Herbs that come from developing countries are sometimes contaminated with pesticides and heavy metals.
"Natural" does not equal "good," and many parents don't realize that some herbal remedies can actually cause health problems for their kids.

My granddaughter has used our products all her life. My daughter would not consider using anything else for our precious little one.

You can view our scientific standard and products at my website where you can find Infant Mix (powder) Multi (for ages 6 mos to 4 yrs) and a Prebiotic/Probiotic supplement, helpful in building immunity: http://www.shaklee.net/martysaffell

Contact me via my website if you have any questions or if you would like audio information on childhood disease.

The little cold could be allergies... try dust mite proofing their bedding. They sell covers for the matress, pillows and make sure you wash their sheets and bed spread once a week with hot water. Vacuum their bedroom often and get rid of all the sutffed animal or put them in a plastic zipper bag.

Hope this helps...
