Almost 5 Month Old Stopped Sleeping Through the Night

My daughter stated sleeping through the night at about 7 weeks. She was sleeping from 10 PM-7:30 AM. This went on from 7 weeks old, until she was 18 weeks. Then one night about 2 weeks ago she started waking every hour (sometimes, every two hours). She woke up one night doing this all of the sudden...and it hasn't stopped! Any suggestions would be great! I was so grateful to have a baby that was sleeping through the night when I had to go back to work and now both me and my husband and are exhausted every day! The doctor said if she was able to sleep an 8 hour stretch in the past that we should not go in to her room when she wakes in the night unless it has been longer than 8 hours (then I should feed her quietly and put her back down). At first we were doing in and giving her the pacifier but that is daunting and the pediatrician told us to let her cry it out (but not longer than 30 minutes). The first night we let her cry it out, and took her about 7 minutes to fall back to sleep. Then she slept until 5 AM and I fed her and put her back down. Last night she went down at 9:30, woke at 1 and took 7 minutes to cry back to sleep, woke up at 3 and we let her go for 15 minutes but it was hard and I went in and gave her the paci, then she was up at 5 and I fed her, and then she was up at 6. Help! Any suggestions or explanations for this sudden change in behavior?

I looked up that "wonder week," and it is fascinating! That's exactly what we are experiencing! That make me feel so much better! Thanks for the suggestion!

Mine always changed his patterns right before a bg milestone gain or growth spurt. You will have to retrain her to put herself back to sleep now. If you do it now, hopefully it will be easier next time she might start waking up again for teething or something. Try the No Cry Sleep Solution book, it will give advice on how to get them to learn to self-soothe. Whichever book or method you decide on, that is what she needs to learn to do. I hope things get better soon, you are so lucky she was sleeping so good already!

My daughter is 4 mths old & I'm in the same boat. I am getting up & feeding her when she wakes at night. So far if she wakes at 1:00 I feed her & she sleeps till her normal time. My daughter is waking up at different times each night but only waking once if I have fed her. I think mine is going through a growth spurt. She is also eating more during the day. I have read that it may be an indication they are ready for food (I haven't started that yet). Good luck & I hope you get some sleep soon.

Waking even after having been able to sleep through the night is normal at about this age. Babies usually go through a growth spurt and start teething at this age. She is probably hungry when she wakes up.

My daughter did the exact same thing. She slept through the night starting at 6 weeks and then at about 4.5 months she just stopped! I was going crazy trying to figure out what to do and then at 7 months she just started sleeping through the night again. We did employ the cry it out method but it didn't work at night, just during naps. It was like a switch flipped at 4.5 months and then switched back at 7 months. Who knows what goes on with these kids! Good luck! :)
