Almost 4 Year Old with Night Terrors - Anything I Can Do?

Hi Moms,
We think our almost 4 year old is having nighgt terrors. He has a lot of the "symptoms" of them so we are assuming that is what is going on. 1 cause can be not getting enough sleep.

He sleeps 12 hours at night, but won't nap. I lay him down at nap time, but he often doesn't actually sleep. He will lay quietly and rest, but won't fall asleep.

They also say not to "wake him up" during an episode b/c that can prolong it. Anyone have any experience with this? He is hysterically crying and yelling when this happens and we have 2 other children who could wake up if we let him yell and cry.

Has anyone had a child who had night terrors? What did you do? Is there anything you did that helped?

Thanks so much.

My daughter had night terrors about the same age. She would cry & gag like she wanted to throw up. She would have no memory of them the next day. She often had them the same day she had attended a birthday party which made me suspect she was sensitive to either all the sugar, red dye or 'too much' excitement. I made an effort to avoid any snacks, juices or drinks that contained dyes or high fructose corn syrup. She 'outgrew' these episodes the same year.

Our daughter had night terrors also. Unlike the other responses you received, our daughter remembered she dreamed about snakes and spiders. We would just do our best comforting her and luckily she outgrew them. I hope this helps.

My daughter had night terrors around 3 and 4 yrs old. We would just try to comfort her and get her to relax so she could go back to sleep. She had no recollection of them either. She also had sleepwalking issues at times. Never try to wake the child because it can cause problems. They do out grow the terrors though.

Hi...It's been a while since you posted your question about Night Terrors, but I thought I might be able to help. Both of my daughters have experienced Night Terrors before. The only way to ease your child during these episodes is to gently hold your child and whisper in his/her ear "Mommy is here, you are alright, everything is alright, Mommy is here, you are safe" etc., etc...Assuring them that they will be OK. My daughter will immediately stop, roll-over, and go back to sleep.

I inquired with my pediatrician about Night Terrors, and sometimes they can be caused by stress/transition/etc...My daughter started having them when we moved into town 3 years ago--a big move, new city, new house.

Hope that helps.
