My son has had a low appetite for months now. He will eat a decent meal in AM and then fight any other meal. He will snack sometimes, but I keep them pretty small, so he will eat meals. He has lost 3 pounds in 6 weeks. Any other mom been thru this?

What can I do next?

I soooooooooo know how you feel, my 2 year old hardly eats a thing but he isn't loosing weight, thankfully. Have you tried giving him Carnation Instant Breakfast in his milk? My DS has been thriving on this, well call them "shakes". Good luck and let us know how he is doing.

There are any number of reasons for this, but if I were you I would take him to his pediatrician. I am always in favor of low-tech, alternative & gentle treatments if possible, but Western medicine is still very good at diagnostics. You can always research alternative treatments - sometimes, before or while you begin other treatements, depending on the severity of what you find. You may also find yourself at a Pediatric Allergist or Pediatric Gastroenterologist, if allergies, Celiac disease or other absorption issues are at play.

Remember that even in the world of doctors, you are in charge. If you don't feel you have the whole picture yet, keep pursuing - ask questions, get referrals, etc.

Good luck!

Hi, my youngest goes through this... I keep her meals really lite through the day, and no snacks. Then we have a later dinner.. She eats her dinner with no problem... Alot of times she just picks, but when she is going through a growth spurt then I can't get the food in fast enough.... A.

My son is almost 18 months old. His weight varies from 19.8 lbs - 20.8 lbs. He has never been more than 20.8. This past summer he dropped off the chart for weight. The doctor ran about a dozen tests and found nothing. My son does not eat big meals, sometimes very little. The dr. even has him drinking just chocolate milk for the calories and not whole white milk. I'm worried not that at his 18 month checkup the dr. will want to send him to a specialist which he almost did this summer. I know what you are going thru. I wish I knew what to do for him so he would eat and gain weight.

I took my 3 year old in b/c she hardly eats anything and like I expected, they said she is fine. The doctor said it is fine for her to be 'picky' if she isn't losing weight (she isn't). I would take him in...3 pounds is a lot for those little bodies. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Whenever I have heard moms talk about this and take thier kids in the DR says that kids eat when they are hungry, they will not starve themselves, and to feed them when they are hungry. They want to eat small meals thru out the day. They have smaller tummies as well, and will go through growth spurts, and then they eat non stop!
Good Luck-

I haven't had experience with this situation, but I'd say schedule an appointment and talk to your doctor about this. I noticed you had the post about the bladder thing too. With the two combined, I'd say your doctor should be consulted.

GO TO THE DOCTOR!!! Picky eating is one thing but a kid that suddenly stops eating and then the loss of weight sounds medical. Please call your doctor and let us know how your little guy is. Good Luck
