during the past 2 years that we have been trying to conceive I have had 2 mis carriges. latley my periods have been more than a week late which makes me have about a 40 day cycle. I'm nervous that my levels of hormones aren't right?? what tests should I ask my doctor to order for me? does anybody know of any good herbal meathod or other vitamins that may help fertility,I've sen some stuff on line but each site gives a little bit of different information. I've also been drinking an herbal pregnancy tea, it's supposed to make a healthy uterus. It seems so confusing, but I know I'm getting older and I don't have a lot of time so if there's something that can help get me on track faster I'd love to hear some ideas you have tried or heard of . Thank you so much, L.

What can I do next?

I used baby aspirin to get pregnant with my last baby after a late term miscarriage. The baby aspirin thins the placenta lining to help with inplantation. As for hormones talk to your doctor. I think mine check my protestorne right after I got pregnant.

Good Luck -- S.

I too was put on Prometrium and got pregnant 4 months later. I also had a dye test to check on my fallopian tubes and it was determined that one of my tubes had a permanent blockage. Might want to start there and then have your hormone levels checked. It took me 2 years so don't give up!

Not sure of the association with fertility but have your thyroid hormone checked. All it takes is a blood test. Low thyroid in women is very common and affects many bodily functions. Before I was diagnosed with low thyroid my periods were always 40 or more days apart. After I went on thyroid meds my periods were 28 days like clockwork.

Hi L.,

I am 38. My husband and I tried having a baby for two years, I had two miscarriages and then was able to conceive and have a beautiful, healthy baby (now 4.5 months old). Two miscarriages in a row are very tough, so we know what you and your husband went through. I also found out that miscarriages are more common than you think.

After my second miscarriage, the ob/gyn had both my husband and me checked for genetic problems (there were none), and then, after two months, she put me on Prometrium, which is progesterone. You would take it at a specific time in your menstrual period, and then, if you become pregnant, you keep taking it up to the 10th week of pregnancy. There are no side effects. This time, I was able to conceive. Some people need extra progesterone for the fetus to develop in the first trimester.

I am from a different country. A friend of my family is an ob/gyn and she thought I should have been given Prometrium after the first miscarriage, that's quite a standard solution in my country if there are no anomalies in your and your husband's genes.

When I try to have baby #2, I will use Prometrium as well.

You should definitely talk about this option with your ob/gyn.

Best luck to you!

V.
P.S. Incidentally, I did not tell anybody I was pregnant until after the amniocentesis results -I was lucky not to show any sign until after I told people about it.

If you are 35 and have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years - it's time to go to a fertility specialist who can evaluate everything. You might need an IUI - but at the very least, you need to find out what is keeping you from getting pregnant. You also should be charting so that you can see if your luteal phase is okay. There is a lot you could be doing to find out why you are not getting or staying pregnant. Have your progesterone levels been tested? Apparently acupuncture helps a lot with staying pregnant as well. I would start acupuncture if you can. But get to a fertility specialist.

I'm 41, 7 months pregnant for the first time after trying for 6 years. For me it was definitely a hormone thing, but not the simple tests your medical doctor will probably do.

Defintely get your LH and FSH tested, and have the die test. Definitely ask to have your thyroid tested, not just the first level, but all three - TSH, T-3, T-4. Definitely get every test that your insurance will cover! From what others have communicated, I am so glad to know that there are progesterone therapies that are helpful in your situation.

But as far as boosting fertility, I had my thyroid checked a couple of times, and all came back normal (low end of normal, but still normal).

Then I started seeing an acupuncturist (Patricia Lollis ###-###-####) and she had me do a more comprehensive test series that checked my body's ability to produce sertonin, cortisols, adrenals and GABA functionality, all of which are tightly related to fertility, and all of which can have reduced functionality due to againg & diet. Turned out my body wasn't producing anywhere near the right amount of serotonin or adrenal hormones. Three months of strict diet and prescribed sero/adrenal supplements and I got pregnant without thinking about it.

And I also feel the best I've ever felt in my life.

So I encourage you to keep faith in yourself and your body, and ask for more testing, go to other resources if your medical doctor just does the standard round of tests.

My heart goes out to you, as miscarriage has been my biggest fear at my age. At 7 months and everything normal, I know it's possible to have a health pregnancy at my 'advanced'! age. :-)

Hi L. - I do not see an update since your original request -are you expecting? If not here is some info: I have been learning recently about how unsafe ingredients in personal care products made by major manufacturers in the US could be contributing to infertility because of unsafe ingredients that could cause infertility, as well as chronic disease. Please visit www.findgreenhere.com (safe cosmetics page, cosmetic database - insert the names of your personal care products including baby products, and/or key ingredients). After researching, you may find that you want to stop using anything on yourself, and hubby or 10-year-old unless it is all "clean and green and toxin-free". That potentially could help with fertility. V. G. :o)
