Babies will do that sometimes. It takes them a little while to learn not to stick their fingers in so far. He'll stop eventually, when he realizes that he's doing it to himself. Don't sweat it!
Hi Moms,
My almost 3 month old keeps sticking his fingers in his mouth to suck and ends up gagging himself. He was just sucking the thumb which was ok, but now has moved onto this. Any tips to stop it or is it something he will just grow out of? thanks!

Hey J.,
My son did the same thing. Don't give it too much attention, or he'll start doing it to get a reaction from you. My son certainly did, sometimes causing himself to vomit. That was always delightful! Anyway, it's totally normal, some babies just do this. He'll cut it out eventually...

Break both habits! Try to replace with a pacifier - speaking from experience...my daughter sucked her thumb and my nephew sucks his fingers - there are a host of problems ahead of you. You cannot take fingers away, but you can take a pacifier away. I couldn't break my daughter's habit until she was 5 and her teeth were already compromised. She also had a "tongue habit" which means she did not learn to swallow correctly and her tongue would push her teeth out whenever she swallowed. Now she's 10 and I've got a lot of orthodontics ahead of me. My nephew sucked his fingers as a baby and now my sister has to resort to putting gloves on an 8 year-old at night to get him not to do it because he simply cannot stop. Your baby is young enough to try other things before it becomes worse. I wish you luck.
It's just a phase. Don't react to it or it will last longer! There are many phases like this... like grinding their teeth together (it makes a really sick sound!) Just ignore it and it will pass.
my daughter would shove her whole fist in her mouth and gag and still do it. it was scary and frankly gross.
she just outgrew it on her on...good luck.
My son did that around that age as well. I didnt make a big deal out of it, and he eventually stopped. Its just a new thing to put in his mouth! He'll eventually learn that its not very comfortable to do that and stop. Maybe try giving him teething rings or a frozen washcloth to chew on would help.
