My son will be two in November and will Only drink milk from a bottle. No matter what I do, he will not drink mild from a sippy cup. He will throw the cup if I try to put anything but water in it. I don't know how to break this habit....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I have given up trying to take the bottle away, for now. I am just going to wait until he is ready. He is acting out too much without it. For example, hitting his 8 month old brother because he has a bottle. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Im in the same situation. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she will ONLY drink milk out of a bottle. I talked to her doctor about it and they told me not to worry about it because children do that when you introduce another child into the family. My daughter sees her little brother (7 months) drinking his bottle so she wants one too. Im still concerned about it but the doctor says its no big deal she will stop drinking out of the bottle and wanting milk in a sippy at her own time and not to force it on her. I hope this helps, if not at least you know you are not alone on this subject. Good luck

hi....well i think i am in the same situation as you and finding the responses not helpful so thought i would commiserate! my son is 17 months old...he drinks water from a sippy cup and actually just switched to drinking very well from a regualr cup. he does not get any juice. he still takes his milk in a bottle and right before he sleeps, we can get him to sleep without it but if we dont give him the milk then and in a bottle he would never drink milk all day long, i have decided not to stress about it, if i was still breastfeeding he would still be nursing and well it is more important that he get some milk then not have a bottle. i offer him milk in a cup and he literally laughs at me and thinks i am crazy, just like everything it else it will come with time. which i know is such a frustrating answer but well i guess like i said i dont have solutions just commiseration!

Hi K.,
I just started today with sippy cups for my 15mo old. I know he is younger then yours but like you would only drink from his bottle. (and LOVES his bottle!) He went all morning today without any milk because he refused to drink from the sippy cup. (kept throwing it down) until finally at lunch time after he ate a bit I held the sippy cup to his lips and he drank from it for quite a while. He was so thursty! I think you need to just keep trying and don't give up. I know it's heart breaking. Mine was crying for it today but seems to be better about it now.
Maybe try and different cup for his milk??? Just an idea.
Good luck!!

Hello,
it is a tough decision and a personel one.. If you want the bottle gone then you need to make the sacrafice.. Try to get him on board like one of the others said get him to throw them away cause he is a big boy now... But the next step is you cant give in.. Give him the sippy if he throws it so be it.. Just set it on the table or someplace he can reach.. Eventually (if you dont give in) he will get thirsty enough to drink form it.. Right now he knows if he throws it and pitches a fit mommy will give in.. He is smart.. He knows how to get what he wants from you..lol.. Good luck and best wishes..

My 2 year old was the same way. I gave him a week warning that we were going to bring the bottles to the goodwill bin at the transfer station. We would give these bottles to babies that need bottles. And sure enough, the day came and I had my son help me bag up all of the bottles, bring them to the goodwill bin, and had him throw them in. I gave him a lot of praise about how great and thoughtful he was to give the babies the bottles. We then went to target, and he picked out sippy cups. You might want to try chocolate milk for now, and then gradually dilute it to regular milk. I have 3 boys, 2,4, and 6, and this worked for me! I hope it helps. Good luck!

I had the same issue. I bought fun and crazy looking straws and that seemed to work. Hope this helps.

My oldest, now 8, she always wanted that bottle. Your 8 month old should be able to use sippy cups. I used the sillicone topped sippies called Nubbys. It looks like a bottle, but it's not. Also, start calling it a cup, use the fact that kids like to do what you do, to your advantage. Get the Nubby sippy cup, alow your 8 month old to drink from it in an upright position and watch what your 2 year old will do.

bribery works every time... otherwise I'd say just throw them out, but you have a younger child.. you can actually start cup training the baby now ( My kids were trained by 9 months) and that way if the baby is trained, then you can throw out the bottles. make a sticker chart and promise something like CHuck E Cheese for a reward..

HI,
I had a two year old just like this! I batteled with her for months until finally the bubba(bottle) fairy came and took away one of her bottles each night and left behind a special prize. I know sounds wacky but it worked I had read about people doing it with pacifiers. Anyhow, as soon as the last bottle was gone I gave her a sippy cup of milk and to my great amazement she actually drank it. Good luck!

First, if he gets calcium and vitamin d from other sources like cheese and yogurt, don't worry if he misses a day or two of milk. Start by eliminating it slowly...one meal at a time. For my son (4) and daughter (20 months), I started with lunch (the least favorite bottle). My son it took me about two months when he was 18 months. My daughter I am still working on. She is more stubborn than my son was. She is getting easier with each day.

Find good distractions. Let him pick out a new cup for his milk. You know your child. Do whatever works for you?

Well, 2 year olds do not like change at all unless they make the change themselves. One of my sons was like this and a friend told me to put some milk in a cup and sit at the table with him with some graham crackers and dunk them in the milk then eat them. Then he started to do this and from that time on he wanted milk in a cup. Sometimes it's a little messy because then they want to dip everything in their milk, and even now my son who I tried this with is 19 and he still likes graham crackers and milk!!!
